Feeding Schedule for your Tegu(s)??

susanpearl Jan 20, 2004 07:38 AM

Hi,

I thought this would be an interesting question...

Everyone seems to have their own unique feeding schedule for their tegu(s).

I'm curious to know what your weekly feeding schedule is like for your tegu.

Do you feed your tegu(s) only a certain number days throughout the week?

Thanks,

Susan P.

Currently my tegu is only eating 1 medium rat every 2 days. During the cooler months he only eats rats.

I keep lobster roaches in my tegu cages so that they have insects available all of the time. As far as feeding schedules go, my red I feed a day old quail and 1 to 2 hoppers on one day. The next day, I give him another hopper. I then wait one to two days. Whenever he acts hungry again and repeat it. My B&W I feed two jumbo mice twice a week and in between he gets regular adult sized mice.

It depends if you’re asking for the schedule from when they were still growing or now when they're adults. When they were growing I usually feed them as much as they'd eat twice a day with 2 different foods. Now that they've stopped growing quickly I feed them maybe once every 3 days until they're full.

I let my tegu decide. He goes in spurts of growth accompanied by an increase in appatite. When he is hungry he'll eat a lot every day. This could mean half a dozen mice, or a couple of week old quail, or half pound of turkey/fruit mix. Food will be consumed like a ravenous beast.

He has just come out of one of those spurts. He will now gingerly eat a few (2-4) mice over a 20 minute period. He'll only eat every 2-3 days now. I will have to wrap up this food and put it in the fridge on the first day of reduced eating cycle. The extra food is warmed and fed out over the next several days - week.

I figure he knows more about tegus than I.

I noticed some of you guys are only feeding mice or rats. Isn't this supposed to be bad for B W tegus? I have always read that they eat animal and plant matter, and that is should be about 50/50. I'm a newby to this, so this is a question, not criticism. Anyway, does it differ between species (BW, Columbian, Red, etc)?
