I have kept numerous types of reptiles over the years, but crocodilians are the only ones I have housed to cause this phenomenom. They create a sheen or silvery looking surface on the water. Now, I know this is not a stagnation problem because this appears as early as the day after I do a full water change and cleaning. I feed the critter in a smaller feeder tank to eliminate contamination. The water source is a 40-50 gallon pond with a Pondmaster 300GPH filter and an additional powerhead to add the extra water flow dwarfs seem to prefer. So with all of this water flow and filtration, what is the cause of this sheen and is it harmful to the croc?

Feeding greasy foods will leave a slick on the water from both the food itself and the croc waste that has been feeding on a lot of oily items.

The thousands of small pieces of shed skin will collect on the water surface and may cause the surface to look gunky too.
