Had/Have quite a problem with my baby pixie

Lance_H Jan 20, 2004 12:00 PM

Last night I looked in on my pixie and his sides had a hollowed out look to them. He eats about 5 small crickets 3-4 times per week so it was a pretty unexpected sight. I then started checking in on him every 30 minutes or so because I had a feeling that he was straining his bowels. Sure enough a few hours later he had prolapsed his bowel. I put him in a shallow bowl of water and paper towels and waited until this morning. He is kept in an enclosure with a shallow floor of Bed-a-Beast, and I could only guess that he had ingested some of the bedding. When I put on the latex gloves and examined him this morning there was a bit of the bedding protruding from the bowel. I pulled it out and a pretty good size piece of the bedding came out. I didn't observe any necrosing of the bowel tissue so I put him back in the container with the very damp power towels and a soaking dish. Now, several hours later, the bowel has retracted and he looks to be in much better shape, but only time will tell. What does everyone else keep their pacman/pixies/toads on, as I don't plan on putting him back into an enclosure with Bed-a-Beast substrate.

Honestly, bed a beast is just about the best thing you can get. Since he is still young, papertowels will make a good substrate as long as you make sure he is not "out in the open." Organic potting soil might also work. But there is another suggestion to consider altogether. When my pyxies were young, they would eat anything that moved, including trying to eat my fingers. Why not feed him with tongs? I trained all of my frogs to eat from tongs or forceps ASAP so that would virtually eliminate the chances of impaction. But as far as chances of impaction go, bed a beast is just about as safe as you can get. But trying papertowels until the frog is older is definitely an option. Andy

Thanks for the advice Andy. I was thinking along the same lines. I used to feed my pacman frog worms with hemastats but since I'm using such small crickets I'm not sure how it will go. I can always coak him into a small plastic container with no substrate and feed him that way and then return him to his enclosure. I just figure that may result in quite a bit of stress.

Yea. Moving containers at each feeding (especially for young'uns that eat fairly often) would be too stressful. Good luck with it. Andy

I used to use fluker moss alone but now, I put heavy big gravels on top of it, that way, the insects won't get to hide in the moss and the frog can still burrow. But as for feeding, it's either she eats the fish on her pond or I hand feed her.Well, not literraly hand feed, more like I use chopsticks.
