Plants?

Chameleon996 Feb 09, 2003 12:30 PM

I currently have Pothos, Umbrella plants, and ficus in my chams cage. I just want to check and make sure that these are safe plants. I sent my mom to get some of these for her cage and this (bad word) lady told her that she didn't know what she was talking about and that none of these were good for lizards.

Pothos is fine, Umbrella plant is fine also if it's the small, waxy leaved variety. If it's the big, softer leaved type I believe that can be toxic. I know a lot of people use Ficus but I'm leary of it as it's a member of the rubber tree family and the latex milk it produces could be an irritant.

I'm enclosing the URL for Melissa Kaplan's site she has lists of toxic/non-toxic plants.

I would also add hibiscus to your list...it's one of my favorites in that the stems are sturdy and support most chameleons and the leaves are non-toxic. The hibiscus also seems to do well under cham lighting better than other plants.

i recommend bougainvillea cause its not toxic my vieled loves to eat the flowers and it grows fast under the uv lights. one 3 dollars one gallon plant quickly grows into thick complex of vines. the leaves also hold water from sprayers well.
