Desert Night Lizard (Yucca Night Lizard)

Mxrider129 Jan 20, 2004 02:24 PM

About a year ago I caught a night lizard up in the high desert but he doesn't seem to grow. My friend (snake12) came to my house one day picked him up and he dropped his tail. That was about 4 months ago and he still hasn't grown his tail back. I got calcium to put on his crickets bu if that doesn't work I don't know what to do.

How big is it now? They are very small lizards no matter what you do. You have had it for a year so your husbandry must be at least partially correct. I keep them from time to time myself. I feed them small crickets and small insects I catch around the porch light, also flightless fruit flies if the lizard is very small. The love small garden spiders if you can get any. BTW, Banded Geckos will eat them (ooops, my bad.) I also gave them water by putting a piece of fibrous plant or Cholla wood in the little water bowl. The lizards seem to like to drink the water that is saturated in the plant material. I used the same cricket dust I use for other lizards. I have not used UV lighting and ambient room temp was around 78-83 degrees. I have used an under the tank heat pad but the lizards never seemed to show an interest in the warm spot. I do not have any at the moment but I plan to get a few this spring. I may try to house them with a moist hide box to see if they like that. I'd be interested in hearing other husbandry techniques for this species.

Here is a pic of a WC Xantusia from S Nevada. It was taken with a video camera which does not give the best stills. I am still shopping for a good camera for herps photos.
