feeding after hibernation

nodaksnakelover Jan 20, 2004 03:38 PM

Hello,
just got my snakes out of hibernation last week, and just put them back in to their warm cages yesterday. Today I noticed my female okeetee was very alert and pulled forward towards me when I opened her cage which is typical when she's expecting a meal. I was planning on waiting till next Monday to feed as that's the day I pick to feed my animals. Could she have taken a mouse today without any problems despite only a day after being returned to heated cages? Just curious.

I hibernated one of my snakes for the first time the past 2 months, took him out of brumation and after 24 hours of being in normal conditions, I fed him a large hopper. He digested it fine and is now back on full grown mice.

This is my only experience with brumation, but I figure if mine did fine yours should too. Just remember to feed a smaller than normal food item for the first meal or 2.

I'm sure in the wild if there is a drastic increase in temps from one day to the next, any snake would be out cruising for food. Its been awhile since I 'officially' brumated corns over the winter, but I think it might be alright if you give it a small meal, but then again..whats the rush?

By the way....THAT IS ONE GORGEOUS ANIMAL!

Whats its origin?

Hi,
that one pictured is from Kathy Love. Beautiful indeed! She'll be breeding for the first time this year. Should have been last year, but I gave her another year to just grow...but she had other plans, and laid a big clutch of infertile eggs! OOPS! But this year she'll be lined up to be bred to an Okeetee male, also from Kathy. Let me know if want some!

That is one beautiful animal. I love the corns that look like that. Thanks for sharing the pic.
