Are Uros like beardies?

Snakemother Jan 20, 2004 04:33 PM

I know I should be posting this on the uro board, but wanted the opinion of beardie owners (and the post a bit down further got me thinking...). Are uros like beardies in temperment and "pet quality"? My daughter calls beardies "personality" pets 'cause the ones we have actually know who's who in our household, and a couple prefer their own human. Beardies look you in the eye, and seem to see you as a whole person, where the smaller lizards we have seem to see us as hands.
Are Uros like that?
(Asking on behalf of my daughter, who might want one)
Thanks in advance for opinions!

There are a number of different species of uros on the market today, and they vary considerably in their personalities.

Some are very sociable and beardie-like in their acceptance of relations with humans, some are extremely shy and retiring. You would need to pick your species carefully depending on what you wanted in terms of character.

Also, many uros are wild-caught and this naturally makes them more cautious than animals that have been captive bred for many generations. For a pet I would always recommend captive bred.

Which species of uro is the most docile and best pet material? We don't care about looks or phases - it would be a pet for my 11 year old. She loves her beardie, but wants to try something different, too.
Thanks!

My mali seems a lot like my bearded dragon, except she seems to be a little more excited about things like coming out of the cage to roam around, and she takes food from my fingers. But my uro had a bad life, so I thought maybe finally having an owner that cares about her might have given her a special personality. I don't know though. I'm going to research about it a little. If all mali uros are as calm and cool about things as mine, then they are definately good pets.

You should go through the uro forum. They have some really cool ideas they're working with right now. Mostly they are working with the idea of 1' of dirt as substrate so that the uros can make burrows. It's a cool idea, and I'll probably try (though with only a couple inches of dirt), but I'm not sure if I like the idea of not being able to get to your pet whenever you might need to. For now I'll stick with the normal substrates and hides and stuff and maybe experiment with dirt in the summer once I can find a good source. Basically, they have found that with dirt as a substrate, as well as higher basking temps (140 degrees) and basking spots that allow for better temperature gradients, as well as many other things, the uros grow quicker and generally seem healthier. I don't think raising them on sand or millet will make that much difference from using dirt if you keep the other things the same (temps, many hiding spots, etc.). I'm not sure though because I'm no expert at all. i think the dirt just sort of makes them seem more at home and natural. You could always also just use a normal substrate and then have a box with dirt in the enclosure for them to burrow. It would probably make it easier to clean.

uros are exactly the same in tameness and have even better personalities then beardies they have more of a character, but i'm talking about cb uromastyx, the wc is a different story some come out nice and tame some don't, uros also look at u straight in the eye and everything like beardies, i have an egyptian occelated yearling i bought from lindsay pike ,its captive bred and its even tamer then my bearded, it actually acts like a dog , its real tame

I have been wanting to make sure that uros are really as full of character as mine. I have also noticed that they look you in the eye and seem to identify you. I think on the uro forum right now it's more about keeping the uro's natural instincts, and getting the best growth and breeding out of them possible. I think that they are doing great with that, but I don't think I could stand to just let my uro run around in a tank every day of it's life and not let it out to run around the house, especially when they seem to enjoy the exercise so much.

I Like beardies, and all in all they are probably my favorite, just because I sort of like the design of their bodies a little more. It's more of a traditional lizard but with the cool head and spikes. But I also find something very appealing about the way uros look. They have that sort of cute homelyness, and the heads are great, they way they look like tortoise heads. But you are right about character. My bearded dragon won't climb up onto my hand if I am trying to take him out. Sometimes he seems confused when I take him out until he realizes it's me, and he won't take food from my fingers (probably because I had to treat him for parasites, and I had to force feed him a couple times over the summer when he would just sort of stop eating for a while...I wouldn't reccomend force feeding, but it seems to work to get my beardie eating again).

they remind me of a small gentle dinasour the way they look, def. have that same "look" that you know and understand if you have dragons and love them as we all do.

some are very large, some are very colorful.

they are vegitarians I think...........

so funny........Ive also played around with the idea of a whites tree frog, also very cute and seem to get to know their humans but being a frog cannot be handled like a beardie etc.
