Maintaining Humidity in 40 gallon breeder

jwalters Jan 20, 2004 06:19 PM

I am getting ready to purchase a bp. I was having trouble sustaining the humidity levels of such a large cage (Critter Cage 40 gallon breeder). Living in Iowa it's really dry here during the winter and simply placing the water dishes on the hot side wasn't enough of a humidity boost. I had heard of using plexyglass over a portion of the cage to hold in moisture. Instead, I decided to give good ol' Glad Cling Wrap a try and works great. I placed Cling Wrap over 2/3 of the screen top, with a hole cut out generously for the heat light. Over night, it brought my humidity from a dry 20% to a resonable 60%. This was cheaper than Plexyglass. I'll keep trying out different lengths until I get the perfect temp/humidity.
And no I will not cover the whole cage with Cling Wrap! Ha!
and no, it's not a baby ball in that large of a cage.
And finally, a little free advertising for Glad Cling Wrap!
Cheers

Ah, I've used saran wrap and tape. That actually sounds a little better, though.

"The serpent crams itself with animal life that is often warm and vibrant, to prolong an existence in which we detect no joy and no emotion. It reveals the depth to which evolution can sink when it takes the downward path and strips animals to the irreducible minimum able to perpetuate a predatory life in its naked horror."

I have a 40 gal breeder and I use two humidifiers in the room (one right next to the tank and one on the other side of the room) and it keeps the humidity right at a steady 65%
