Tank size prefs?

poisonfrog420 Jan 20, 2004 06:44 PM

Since I did not get a reply to my last post I will just post another set of questions!

I have 4 D. Leucs in a 20l tank right now. I want to make a bigger nicer tank for them but was not sure how to go about it. The tank they are in now has about 2" of gravel then 2" of dirt with some local ferns and two tropical plants I got at wal-mart. I want something better since this is a crappy set up (the frogs are doing great though).

The two tank sizes I was thinking of are the 29gal thank and a 30gal hex. This tank is much taller than it is wide, but I kind of like it. Which tank do you all think would be better for the frogs? Which will be easier to set up? Do you think that I would need to buy an additional light for either tank to grow the plants? Thanks for any and all replies, Jake.

Hey Jake,

I would go with the 29gallon. It will be easier to plant and light.

A 29Gal is going to be the same base dimensions as your 20L just taller. The 30Gal hex is also going to be a tall tank. Unless you have experienced unusual amounts of climbing I would try and get more base dimension for your buck. I would personally go with a 40L. I have one set up for 5 yellowbacks, and they do great in it. It costs less than $50. It is a little less common size so you might have to look for it. It is 48" inches long, same length as a 55Gal, but much shorter and a little skinnier. Its got perfect height dimensions for darts that spend most of their time on the ground or within six inches of it. It is a long tank though so make sure you have the room for it. And for filling the tank, some of the prettiest and most hardy plants I have are from Home Depot. Gotta love their $1.95 tropicals. Good luck

Actually, you should go with the taller of the tanks. Leucs like to climb a lot more than the other darts (other than thumbnails). Mine hardly come down, spending all of their time at the top of the logs or tank. They only come down when there is no more food at the top.
