New Grey Tree Frog

iluvturts Jun 06, 2003 10:53 AM

A friend of mine found a frog (which I have identified to be a grey tree frog) and brought it to me to keep with my two firebellied toads.

I wanted to make sure that they would not be harmful to each other before putting them in the same aquarium. If anyone has any information on this I would be very appreciative.

Thank you!

well,
i don't know how much serious study has been doen of this but the "common knowledge" of frog/toad keepers has been for years, that many amphibians are particularly sensitive to the skin secretions from fire bellied toads. So everybody (er, almost everybody) isolates them. With that said, there ARE folks with large viv's who have many different species with firebelies for years and no apparent problems. But on the other hand toxicity IS a real issue with some species. As a young boy i killed several leopard frogs before I learned to carefuly distinguish them from pickeral frogs by keeping them togther is a 30 gallon aquarium. ALso hyla versicolor is very arboreal (despite the fact that they are everywhere in the East, i know lot of herpers who have never seen one in the wild because they are always in the trees)so it will spend more time high above the fire bellies. But unless your cage is very large i wouldn't do it.

Hi,

Gray tree frogs are way too much fun to keep. They are deffinetly one of my favorite tree frogs. I wouldn't recomend keeping them with your fire-bellied toads though, infact I wouldn't recomend keeping any other amphibians with your fire-bellied toads. For information about why not to keep different species of amphibians together have a look at www.amphibiancare.com/frogs/communitytank.html I also have a gray tree frog care sheet on my website that might help you out with the basics of their care. They make great captives and will live a long life if you care for them properly. Good luck!

Consider this: these two animals occupied different Microhabitats in an ecosystem, they are from entirely different continents, and they have entirely different captive care. If you insist on keeping the gray tree frog, you should buy a 20 gallon tall at the very minimal. Do research on the Web for the captive care of the species. Under no circumstances should these two species be mixed.
