Getting Monitor, need some advice

ForgottenWillow Jan 20, 2004 07:29 PM

Hey everyone I was looking around for some pet stores that sell monitors and I found one through this site in Road Island that is selling Argus, Black Tree, Dumeril's, Nile, Water, Mangrove, Red ackie, Timor, Peachthroat, Black throat, White throat and Savanna monitors. My situation is this is my first monitor though I have raised other lizards before and currently I only have room for a 40 gal. tank for the next 1 1/2 years. Other than that Id like somting somewhat friendly. If you could give me some advice as to which of these would suit me best Id appreciate it also post any pics of these guys if you could Thanks!!!

The two best choices there would be either the ackie or the timor. I would go with the ackie because they stay prety small (around 20 inches or so) and they get very tame. I don't know much about the timors other than that they stay pretty small. I hope this helps. I am sure there are people who know a little more about them that wil help you.

I think a 40 breeder would be a bit cramped for an adult Timor. They also can be really really shy, especially wild caughts. I'd get the ackie too.

Would be the ackie, even thats small for more than a year. I keep my ackie in a 55gal but I think its a bit narrow. He does good in it and has alot of burrows. The medium and large species could live in a 40 for a month or 2. My female BT/WT cross was in a tank that size for a month (from 2 months old to 3 months old) and it was too small (she went from 16 inches to 26 inches in that time). In 10 months time she went from 16inches to 5ft long (one year old).

You could keep a pair of storr's in a 40 breeder(36x18x16) for their entire lives. Storr's are about half the length of an ackie.
