I have a Vailed that is having problems. He seems to be doing fine then out of the blue he will reach up with his back feet and grab onto his front legs and not letting go. He then will lose control of his motor functions and fall to the bottom of the cage. He struggles after a couple hours of lying on the bottom of the cage,he then trys to get up but it seems like his brain wont tell his back feet to let go of his front arms. Finally he does let go and then climbs back onto his branch and acts normal. He does seem to be opening his mouth more now than he use to. His eating habbits have slowed to about 5 crickets a week. This behavior has been going on for about six weeks. Any information would be greatly appreciated Thank you in advance.

first off are you using uv light, and second are you using calcium supplements with vitamens? what are your other parameters such as basking and such. from what you have stated so far it sounds like MBD, look it up and research it but in short he suffers from lack of control of his muscles

J.P.,

Sorry to hear your veiled is having such problems.

We had a young cham with similar behavior. We suspected something unusual, and it was getting worse by the day. The body contortions made no sense! The vet observed him as we described the symptoms for the past days - and we conference called another reptile vet. It was agreed that it was a neurological problem and he was given medications.

We suggest you get yours to an experienced reptile vet ASAP.
