Importing/Exporting?

RachelS. Jan 20, 2004 08:13 PM

I have always wondered how to do this and what the regulations are. I would love to do this in the future and find out what kind of new morphs are out there breeding today. Then produce some of my own in captivity. Maybe someone could enlighten me? Thanks!

Well first off I don't want to sound rude in what I am saying and that is not what I am trying to do. Today everyone seems to want to get into importing so they can get the next morph or get morphs cheap. Well to be honest with the way people are going to Africa now during hatching season there will be no more morphs being shipped in bulk shipment as in the past. These farms are now being watched with careful eyes by many people as they now realize what the different morphs are and how much money they can get for them. These people purchase these morphs from the farms for higher than normal prices, and then offer them to certain breeders, importers, etc here in the US. These animals will not be offered to the general Public until after they have been imported by these people and then they will more than likely be commanding the same prices as normal.
Importing is not an easy thing to accomplish. There are great expenses that go with the importation process. License fees, freight, inspections fees (USF&W & Customs), Broker fees, cost of shipping the shipment from the Port of Entry to you (if your not close enough to get it yourself), and then the cost of the animals. Also if you are not known by the exporters they want you to pay up front for the animal which is a big risk as you do not know who you can trust. Personally in the last 5 years I have lost about $15k to dishonest exporters. So as you can see it is not really worth trying to get a morph at a cheaper price or such you are better off getting to know a good breeder and see what kind of deal they are willing to make you. Most larger breeders will make better deals than what their animals are normally priced at. All you have to do is ask.
