fecal sample test

harberrat Jan 20, 2004 09:25 PM

i called my vet regarding fecal sample test. they said $55-ithought that was high-they would also have to send it out-so results wouldn't be quick. do pet stores do the testing? what is the going rate for a test? i appreciate any feedback. laura

I cannot imagine why a reptile vet would need to send out a fecal float and direct smear. Are you sure they weren't talking about a fecal culture? (completely different and not what you want). I live in the Bay Area in California and our prices are about as high as you can get and a fecal float and direct smear cost about $40.00 at my clinic (thank God I do my own ). I don't think the clinic you called knew what you were asking for. And for your other question I would never trust a pet store to do a fecal test on one of my animals.

I just sent you an email with a few questions about doing fecals. My microscope has been shipped and I can't wait to get it and start doing my own fecals.

Thanks!

No, unfortunetly, it's alot more complicated than what a "Pet Store" could perform. The $55 fee is probably including the office visit, which is customary. The money spent will be well worth it to have your Uro checked out by a proffesional. However, Vets are like anything else you purchase. Find one that is familar with and has treated reptiles if possible (in your area). The last time I had to send a fecal to be analized it cost me $18. But, my Vet knows me. Never hurts to befriend your Vet! You will have to do this again after treatment to ensure proper results, if the first fecal comes back positive. This second fecal should be less expensive.
