Alrighty, old subject, new questions..............

RedQuake Jan 20, 2004 10:43 PM

I understand the impact winter has had on my geckos, i'm no longer freaking out that Boo isn't eating and in every other aspect he seems to be completely normal. Still active and bullheaded as usual LOL. Dot on the other hand eats like the piggy she has always been...each gecko is different and since Dot is still growing her huge appetite compared to Boo's fasting isn't shocking.............BUT.........

Since he isn't eating it would be normal then that he isn't pooping either right. He's drinking plenty (i got him one of those water bottle bowls, really cool and i see him drink) so his poops have been more white urate than anything. (((he's on tiles no chance of impaction)))

Also I just redid his tank with new caves and a hammock and his climbing is now more frequent as he can reach the top of the tank (thankgoodness for locks LOL). He spends 90% of his time trying to get out but i did have most of the girls out this past week and he was out and about too. Pardon my lack of knowledge but will a male become obsessed with breeding so much so that he just stops eating completely?

Thanks for any input

I've done alot of work to my gecko unit and the guys tanks. I'll take some pics this week

i haven't bred yet, but i know from reading stuff from here & books that some males go insane for females. many males stop eating while breeding. i've heard (seriously) about not being able to house males that aren't actively breeding in the same room as females, because the males sometimes go insane, stop eating, and spend all their time trying to get out, to get to the females! apparently, some people think it's only important that the males not be able to see the females (lest they go insane). but i'm suspicious that pheramones or something might be involved (just a personal guess, i'm a bio person). so if your dude is shrinking, especially if he's not actively being used for breeding, put him in another room, and he should settle down.

Good stuff. Thanks. He hasn't lost any weight by the looks of him, he's huge. I'll have to see if i can switch one of my dads fish tanks with Boo's so he's upstairs (we have limited space with my leos and my dads fish lol). I found a female leo that has bred before for sale and i'd like to get her. After the quarentine period i might put her with Boo. I'm not 100% confident that any of my girls are ready for that yet and i'm thinking its best to wait until next year to breed them. We are rearranging the house a bit and i'm going to have the entire lower level to myself in a few months so that will help out with space. The room i'm in now will be the gecko room WooHoo

With a little luck or perhaps a miracle i'll be out on my own before the summer so i'll have alot more room.

Thanks for your input. I appreciate it

P.S. Boo is currently sleeping......so cute, he's using a small rock as a pillow

dude, i have just graduated (from college), and have a fairly nice apartment to myself. so, instead of getting a car (since i walk to work), i have an apartment full of animals! beware- the geckoes are the most addictive of them all! my kitchenette is full of fish, my 'dining area' is full of geckoes, i have sugargliders in my bedroom, and a part-time free-range ferret in the rest of my apartment! hehe...

(the axolotl and toads are at my lab for the moment, but normally live in the kitchen/dining area... hehe)

it takes a lot of time to take good care of them all (and going on vacation cost me a lot of money for boarding, etc.), but it's worth it to me. the only issue is that my ferret is elderly & was not properly socialized (she is from a shelter), so she's not exactly litter-trained... eww... at least she gives kisses to make up for it...

hehehe sounds like a regular little zoo. i want so bad to expand my animal companians but at the moment its just not possible. I went to university almost 7 years ago (man i'm starting to feel old). I was in a basement apartment in one city and going to school while working back home in another city 45min away. My parents were great picking me up every weekend to come home and work. At the end of the year i made some bad choices leaving me where i am now. I chose to return home and continue to work instead of sticking with school. BIG mistake. From there things jsut went downhill....got engaged, lost my job, broke off my engagement then went back to school. From there things got better, i'm now a personal support worker employed to assist developmentally and physically challenged adults but i'm still stuck at home.....finding full time work in this field is hard. So now i'm at a point, wishing every night for a windfall to help me get out on my own so i can do things i have always wanted to. More of my artwork (can't paint etc. in the same room as the geckos....fumes make me dizzy LOL) and then expand on my herp collection. I still want to build a huge water enclosure for a water dragon But most of all i want to breed my geckos.....seeing a baby from an egg that my girls laid would just be the best!!!!!

I've thought about taking a vacation and clearing my head so i can really think about what it is i want to do for the rest of my life......but my geckos and dog need a good caretaker and i'm not very trusting of people with my guys, even family LOL I'm a protective mom so to speak, leaving them would be aweful!

The day i do get a place of my own......perferably a house as my dog would get me kicked out of an apartment LOL, there won't be a room (except the bathrooms) that doesnt' have some herp in it
