Goblet baby pyxie climing into his water *** this weeks pic :0)

eve Jan 20, 2004 11:02 PM

Well so far so good, this guy just keeps filling out and taking more space up in his water dish.

I was reading below about substrates, I have Goblets tank set up with his water bowl and a splattering of potting soil all around it, leading into deeper soil and sphagnum moss mixture on opposite end where he digs in.

As far as eating, and feeding, he sits in his water alot, so I usually drop crickets and supers and bugs in his shallow water right in front of him. And he nails them in seconds.

This way I dont have to worry about him eating any substrate.
Like I said so far so good. Its working for now !!

Hes starting to know I'm coming with food. He does not jump away like he did a few weeks ago when I got him. He stays and waits for me to drop it ! Pretty neat, I get to see him alot.

Good thing your frog is like that. Life is easier for you meanwhile, mine is so lazy! She doesn't eat terrestrial critters on her own. I need to feed her by hand so that she will eat. When I don't get to feed her, she eats the fishes in her pond.

as far as feeding it, mice and things? If thats waht your talking about, I agree, and will NOT ! I like other critters to much to do that.
I will feed superworms , nightcrawlers, crickets, bugzzzzzzzzzz
I think when older you can give them cooked chicken and things.

Anyway is that what you meant? Or not?

I have no problem feeding my pets live animals. My dad used to own snakes and a comodo dragon. I used to feed them too so I've been doing a lot sadistic things long before.
What I meant in my previous reply was, I don't have the guts to care for a Pyxie because, as Oogieboogie knows, I have a phobia with frogs. The only reason why I was taking care of a pacman is because, of all the frogs I know, this frog least resembles a ... um... frog. that's why I choose an albino and a female. They are colorful, round, and doesn't croak.
Pyxies on the otherhand are very uncolorful and they grow really big. They are BIG frogs that looks so much like a frog! I'll just faint looking at it.

LOL... I know. I don't know why but I'm just afraid of frogs. My dad collects exotic animals and some are even special imports from other countries but he's afraid of Geckos. I guess everyone is afraid of something :D
Wanna hear a funny story, well, when I was in elementary, I was walking with my Nanny to school. I was really happy that morning and I was jumping and turning around as we walk. When I landed, I saw this HUGE, to say the least, and grousome TOAD staring at me. My immediate reaction was to yell. I yelled so loud that I was heard 3 blocks across from where I'm standing and after that, it's not only that toad who is starring at me. Thank goodness it didn't jumped towards me.

Matter of face if my husband was not afraid of big bugs I would buy a taranula, LOL

Because they are sooooo cool and easy maintenance. All you need is sand or any dry bedding and some insects or any live feeder and that's it. You're good to go. And they only require small enclosure. Heck, you could even just put them in a jar.

I am terrified of tarantulas and large spiders. Ok, ok ANY spider! I feel like such an incredible wimp. I am a vet tech and a biology teacher and I am absolutely terrifed of spiders. I do not even like looking at them in their aquariums. My students think this is hilarious!

One time, when I was in high school, I was crossing our backyard (we lived in the country and had five acres, so a BIG backyard) and I saw a tarantula. I ran, FULL SPEED all the way to my house. When I reached the house my dad laughed so hard he almost wet his pants. He asked me, "Did you think he was going to chase you?"

LOL... If you have a phobia, you just do things like that :D
When i was in the sixth grade, I owned a green boa and I was just letting it crawl outside it's cage while I was watching TV, then my cousin came and thought it was just a toy but then when I touched it, it moved. It turned out he had a phobia with snakes so he run and jumped on the kitchen table and he was so scared, his whole body is practically shaking.

There are no captive Komodo dragons in private collections In North America. I think you must be thinking of something else. Maybe another species of monitor???

RaderRVT Jan 21, 2004 10:47 PM

that was a rescue ( I can't remember how it got there) and lived in a rescue facility in the Everglades.

cheshireycat Jan 21, 2004 11:11 PM

I live in Miami and I know that there are several Komodo dragons in Florida that are showed at zoos and such, so I don't doubt that there's also a rescue facility with one or more... although I can't remember exactly where it was advertised that they were going to have some a while back. These aren't privately-owned collections, though, bear in mind.

I don't think they were funded by the state, so aren't the animals "theirs"? Just curious, I don't know how the law works in those types of cases.

P.S. Komodo Dragons are Monitors.

holy Jan 21, 2004 07:41 PM

Who says that he's staying in the US and who says that it's bought here? It's actually irrelivant if there is no captive bred dragon here. Just because it's beyond your knowledge and capabilities to get one, it doesn't mean that he doesn't have it.
Why did you even want to get in to this conversation in the beginning? You want to prove me wrong? You want some 15 minute fame because you are right? We are actually just having a fun conversation about a frog and here you are being a big ass.

LOL, Private collectors have lots of things people don't know about. If you have the money andor the connections you can get just about anything.

cheshireycat Jan 21, 2004 11:08 PM

I don't want to be rude, but considering that you misspelled Komodo, I don't think he's being an a** by voicing in a forum that he doesn't believe it. That said, they are monitors and they are lizards and he's making that clear and just stating the truth as he knows it. Maybe your dad does have a Komodo dragon, but if this person has more reason to believe you're confused (because of what you, yourself, has said and because his information as of the moment is that there are no privately-owned collections of them) over believing you, why call him names? Why not tell him something that convinces him or just ignore him?
