Humidity Ideas for the North East ?

Cycluracornuta Jan 21, 2004 09:08 AM

The Rhinos live in a loft above the garage, that is primarily heated by a window heater/ac unit. Humidity is less than 20% without a room humidifier. With a big room humidifier running, it only bumps up to 40% and eats up 3 gallons in 12 hours. I am looking at piping water up to the room, and setting up an automated fixed system that is low maintenance. I am leaning towards pro mist. Does anyone have any other ideas or suggestions ?

Remember my skin problems with the chucks? It was caused by low humidity-about 16-18%. The room humidifiers are useless. I use a whole house humidifier in my 10x16 room. I can obtain just about any level I want. I bought it at Sears for about $125.00. It sets on rollers on the floor. I keep the level at about 60% and use about 7-8 gallons a week. I did away with the 2 containers made for it that are about 2.2 gallons each and just dump a 5 gallon bucket of water in it when needed(usually 3 times in 2 weeks). It has duel fans and work well.

Sounds like you have the top of the line. I have a sears humidifier on wheels also, only has one container, about 2.5 gallons, and can pour about a gallon into the bottom before it overflows. If there was one that could be hard piped I would like to go this route, but haven't been able to find it. I am looking at putting a bath tub up in the loft, and using it as a reservoir for a pro mist system.

Hi John, we have the identical problem here. I keep the redfoot tortoise too in the same room with my green iguana so I was going crazy trying to get the humidity up. I had some success with the hot mist type of humidifier but refilling it and cleaning it every single day was a huge drag. I finally went with the pro-mist last February. It has been wonderful. My biggest problem has been that the nozzles it comes with put out TOO MUCH mist and it pools up a bit and it is a breeding ground for bacteria. They sell a super low flow nozzle that takes care of this. The guy is at the white plains show every time and is a really nice guy and can help you out and advise you on what you might need in terms of nozzles and tubing.

I have one nozzle directed onto the redfoot habitat and that works great. It is on a timer (that it came with) that comes on for one minute once an hour. In fact the whole shebang comes on once an hour for one minute. 2 nozzles aim at where the green iguana sits most of the time.

In a room the size you are trying to humidify I would not be surprised if you had to leave the humidifier on as well tho.

Good to hear a positive report on promist. I Just talked with the Pro Mist man - he is a wealth of information. Some of his recommendations actually steered me away from his product. Now I have to do some more home work.
