What do i do with my gravid Jackson

Mr_Jackson Jan 21, 2004 10:43 AM

I have 4 jacksons (1.3) in a 2x2x4 foot screen cage. Ive had my 3 veileds for a while now but nothiing of mine has ever been gravid. Do i take the gravid female out of the Screen cage and put her by herself? Should i keep the offspring away from her? What special care is she going to need. And how do i know when shes gonna have them? Any advice would be great.

Thanks

I'll let someone else give you advice on the care, etc. (though I think you should have done a little research on that before you let them mate), but I do not think it is a good idea to have 4 chams (of any species) in one cage - let alone 4 in such a small enclosure. My little 8 month old Luna (only 4" s/v) is in the same size cage all by herself and I can't imagine having even one more in with her. So I am sure the first thing suggested will be to separate all of them...

here is an article to get you started on gravid females:

-----
0.1 veiled - Luna
0.2 green anoles Jaida & Jetta
0.1 brown anole - Jamaica
0.2 house geckos - Gaia & Tia
0.2 felines - Kyndra and Líta

I would only have a maximum of two in that size cage but thats just me. As for your gravid female I would seperate her into her own enclousure. When she is about to give birth she will start pacing around her cage and will probably stop eating a few weeks before she gives birth. As soon as she has her babies you need to seperate them from her or she may have a nice treat. They will need to eat small crickets and fruit flies until they get older. I will warn you my friend recently had his female give birth to twenty five babies and only six have survived past the age of four months. It is tough but incrediblly rewarding.
Good Luck and have fun
If she's just been empregnated it will take some where between five and seven months for her to drop her babies.

About the multpile jacksons in one cage...i do the same with 2 and alot of breeders do it as well...veileds are so much more aggressive then jacksons and maybe people assume jacksons are the same...as long as you have a bif enough tank all the people i talk to at a recent reptile trade expo said their jacksons live fine together..even males living with other males...i know they werent looking to sell me anything because at the time we were talking about veileds and i just mentioned the jacksons...so its not like it was a sales pitch or anything
