Anthropomorphising?????????? Not really

eve Jan 21, 2004 10:49 AM

I would like to voice an opinion to the BOND, that can happen with human and reptile.

And no, I do not believe they have the SAME deep emotion as humans, but I do believe they learn trust and can become bonded.

I purchased a female egyptian uro Cleo, 4 years ago(some of you have seen Cleo) from a friend who was working with her but had limited time.
She was severely burned, 3d degree burns on back and sides. Open bloody fleshy wounds that took almost another year to get closed.

Daily, soakings in provodine, and I can't even count the amount of tubes of neosporin used during that time.
This girl was held in a towel most of the time just to keep her calm.

Basking light had to be so low as not to hurt her open wounds that she was dark brown in color, and barely warm.

Anyway, Cleo and I bonded so strongly, that just calling her name she will run out of her slate rock burrow and come to the side and jump up to come out.

When out and running on floor thats set up with rocks and appropriate for lizard exercise, LOL, she will come to me when I sit down and sit with me.

This lizard is so trusting of me, and I of her, and it is not just for food, or in my mind, It is a rememberance and trust and bond created, when she was suffering.

Anyway just my thoughts, they can become a trusting friend !

I had to say "Uro"...you know what I meant (shhhh) the little collared...how is he doing? LOL

Hope all is well with you. Also how are the hybrid chucks of dvl's? I have one male that is sort of reddening a bit...if that's a word.

LADIES RULE, EVERYWHERE !!! LMAO

Disrespect Eve? No way. I'd have half the Chuck forum after my neck. I'd probably end up 6 feet under DVL's Chuck pen. Eve is awesome. She has single handily kept the Chuckwalla forum alive. I was laughing at John E's funny reference to sand (as opposed to soil. popular debate as of late).

Now John E is a different topic all together. He sends me lizards that never stop eating! I need 3 jobs just to support my Flukers Farm cricket bill.

I got my mali uro Sam the day before christmas eve. My dad had gone to his friend's house the week before and looked down to see a dark, disgusting 10 gallon tank with what he first thought to be a tortoise (she was that overweight!). The guy said that he had her for the last two years and that she eats iceburg lettuce. My dad also noticed what looked like large infections on her left and right sides, as well as about 1/5 of her back.

So it took me a week, but I finally got in contact with the guy and asked to come over and see the animal. By then the "infections" were dry (we later found out that they are scars from 3rd degree burns, and they miraculously heeled without infection in the disgusting, fece incrusted tank!), and I got a look at what she was being kept in. A 10 gallon aquarium with no top, a hot rock, a bowl of dirty water, and nothing but dead grass cuttings and feces for floor covering! I'm going to post a pic soon, because I can't explain how bad it was. The guy surrendered her with no problems, and he through in a cracked 29 gallon tank, stand, and a heat lamp...which he probably was using up until the lamp fell on her (he had it taped inside the cage!). I got her setup and got her eating right in no time, and I think that me being the first person to ever give her attention seems to have a great affect on her! She loves to eat out of my hand (she'll happily bound across her tank, which is now a 48"x13"x13"...still small, but not bad). Plus, she will walk up to my hand and sit on it if she wants to come out and run around.

I think the word "anamorphising" or however it's spelled/pronounced gets thrown around a little too much. I don't think really many people at all will look at a lizard and assume it has all the same emotions as a person. i do fail to believe that it really doesn't have any emotions. I think that some reptiles are capable of forming bonds with their owners. I believe a good example is the argentine black and white tegu? I'm not sure though...I thought I heard something about them recognizing their owners.

know their owners and get very friendly, mine will hiss at people she does not know !

I have many many collareds, and they are so very sweet and come right to you and jump into your hand and sit.
And alot were wc's.

I think its all in the time you invest in any animal as to how it acts. And yes some never like people,or tame down so to speak.

But some become extremely friendly, and do have a bond with you, know your voice and smell.

I know exactly what you mean. I have 2.2 Saharans. They respond to my voice--coming out when I come home, moving from area to area of their enclosure as I move around the room, etc. I have one of my males that won't go to sleep at night if I don't pick him up to say goodnight! This happens no matter what time of night it might be. My husband thought I was adding human traits to the animals at first, but he's come to see what I'm talking about! Your girl sure is a lucky (and pretty) lady!
