OT - Photos of two new pets ... not reptiles...

veronicag Jan 21, 2004 11:09 AM

Last week I adopted two very adorable sugar gliders. For those of you that don't know what a sugar glider is ... they are like a small flying squirrel - but much friendlier. Their native habitat is Australia and Indonesia. They are noctural and love to come out and play with us in the evening after our reptiles have all gone to bed. I just thought I'd share this with everyone. They are very interesting creatures. The female carries her babies around in her pouch like a kangaroo.

This is a photo of Stitch, the male... he sure isn't camera shy!

This is Stitch's mate, Cleo. They have already had 2 babies (joeys) and will most likely have more. They can have up to 4 a year. Cleo sure loves her yogurt...

And the rest are photos of Stitch. He's quite the camera hog!

They are only about 10 inches long from nose to tip of tail, and 6 inches of that is tail.

Take care everyone!

That's so cool Veronica. How did you get these? Is there breeders or do pet shops by you sell them? I remember my girlfriend worked at a pet shop that had a mean little one. First time I ever seen one. They use to keep him by the register, and whenever someone peeked in on him he'd make a really weird rumbling noise or growl, and all you would see where his big beady eyes peeking out at you. They named him Gremlin. I guess they did not handle him enough or maybe because it was only in the day time he would see people. He was a biter my girlfriend told me, but they sure are cute. I never saw another till this day available around here. Lucky you!! They sure look so adorable. Good Luck with those two, and babies to how cool is that.

The ones I have seen in the pet stores have never done very well. They will bond to you if you spend time with them. I spend about 30 minutes to an hour with them each night. Gremlin (great name!) was probably upset during the day because he's noctural. They just want to be left alone during the day to sleep. I imagine the register and the customers kept him awake most of the time. Poor little guy.

I got these two cuties from a breeder in Oregon that is not going to breed anymore. She sold all of her gliders. They were all hand fed and tame. If you don't spend any time with them, they can get a little mean and bite. But ours don't bite. In fact, when I open the cage door at night they will jump out onto my shoulder to come out and play. They will also sleep in your hands if you make a cup with your hands. They love the warmth from our hands.

What do they eat?

They eat a wide variety of fruits and eat a staple pellet diet that includes the vitamins and protein that they would normally get in the wild from the insects they eat. I can give them an occasional cricket (which they absolutely love!) or even mealworms. So their diets are similar to beardies, except no greens. They also love yogurt and honey. In the wild they would like the sap from trees and honey is about the closest thing we have for them in captivity.

They can even get MBD just like beardies if they don't get enough calcium. So we have to give them fruits with high calcium to phos. ratios and supplement with calcium and a multi vitamin.

Now do they have to have UVB or can you just substitute with D3? I've started taking d3 and sitting under my Powersun bulbs to make sure I don't get MBD.......and for some reason I keep having the urge to lick my monitor.

Have a good one!

Since they are nocturnal, they really don't need UVB or D3. They hide during the day and are not exposed to any lights/sun. They come out in the light of the moon and begin hunting for their food. But calcium is really important to their bone development and organ function.

Lick your monitor? LOL You're such a spaz. Ever consider therapy Rob? Just kidding! Did you hear about the guy that lives with several adult iguanas and has legally changed his name to Henry Lizardlover? He gives his iguanas full run of the house. And he's SINGLE! Imagine that! Anyways, you'd make a good Rob Reptilian or Rob Dragon. What do ya think?

Yeah, I've heard of him. From what I understand he puts his igs into provocative poses and takes pictures of them.

I have not doubt the guy's single. Seems like Henry's been lovin' his lizard(s) in more ways than one!!

If I do go down that road and change my name then yes, I think I will most definitely need some therapy! I may eventually have a lot of reptiles but eventually I'd like to have a human fimily too. To each his own, I guess.
