Do Tegus have a natural tendency to burrow??

peterfromme Jan 21, 2004 11:09 AM

Hey,

I'm just curious to know if tegus have a natural tendency to burrow? I buddy of mine acquired a baby B&W tegu, and it spends a lot of time under the substrate. Granted it may take time to adjust, but do they typically burrow?

I know that many desert monitors create underground channels in their substrate, just curious if tegus are somewhat similar...

Thanks,

Peter F.

YES, tegus given the right substrate will dig like CRAZY. my tegus spend probably about 50% of their day digging and making new tunnels. right now i have 2' of dirt in Taz's cage. his new one will have 3-4' of dirt in it. and just so you know, a B&W tegu are not a desert species. didnt want to get you confused since they dig. and all monitors dig not just desert species.
