NASTY BLUE

BRONXBOY Jan 21, 2004 12:55 PM

HELLO EVERYONE.

I WAS JUST WONDERING HOW I WOULD GO ABOUT TAMING A NASTY, 4 MONTH OLD, MALE, BLUE TEGU? I TOUGHT THEY WERE KNOWN FOR BEING DOCILE LIZARDS? NOT THIS ONE LOL
I JUST HAVE TO PUT MY HAND NEAR THE GLASS OF HIS TANK AND HE RUNS OVER AND STARTS ATTACKING IT, I SLOWLY PUT A GLOVE INTO THE TANK NOT TO SCARE HIM, HE JUST BITES THE GLOVE FINGERS AND THEN STARTS MOVING HIS HEAD BACK AND FORTH LIKE HE IS TRYING TO TEAR THE FINGER APART.
ANY SUGGESTIONS?

THANKS

my red that you asked about is about 4 months (i think thats how tegus act when real young). my b&w (never held until i got him) i got him when he was about 7, and he never has opened his mouth to me. give him about 2 or 3 months and he'll mellow out a lot. every time he opens his mouth im gonna throw a cricket in there, its worked with my other reps to calm them down. good luck and dont give up, it pays off. if you want you can im me on yahoo at heyslick62. later, justin

Patience is the key. Along with that the Tegu will hopefully tame down nicely as he ages. If he is new to you, give him some space at first and then some regular handling once he settles in. They seem to tame down almost naturally at about a year to year and a half, from my limited experience. I have info and photos of growth on blues on my website. Best of luck!

Well honestly you did not give enough information to really tell what could be done to help. But if you got it at this age it will be a little difficult to calm it down but it is possible with determination because it is possible to calm it down.
