Frog Identification Help!

passerby Jan 21, 2004 01:12 PM

I've recently come into possession of a couple of aquatic frogs. One of them is definately an ADF, but the other one has me stumped. The girl I got them from had no idea and didn't care, but I was hoping someone could identify him for me.
He's easily three times the size of the ADF (about the size of the top of a pop can), mottled brown and dark brown on top, and cream-colored on the bottom. His front "hands" are not webbed, but his back feet are, with three claws on each foot. Along each side he has a row of lighter colored lines that look almost like stitches. I thought he might be a African Clawed Frog, but he's *huge*! Any idea? And, if you know what he is, is he compatible with the dwarf frog, or should I move them around?
Thanks!!

Yep.. that's an African Clawed Frog, Xenopus Laevis. They can get very large, some females can grow to be as big as a clenched fist, males are slighly smaller. You should seperate the ADF away as the bigger frog may make a meal of it soon. If you visit my ACF site and have a look at care and food info that should give you an idea. The link is below.

Thank you *so* much!
I'll separate them immediately - my only problem now is what to do with the dwarf frog. I have another ADF... how likely do you think it is that they'll fight/maim each other if I put them in the same tank? I really don't have room in my dorm for another big tank, but I'd hate to stick them together and have one of them die...

Hi,

If you put two ADF's of around the same size together they will not fight, they will live together happily. It's only the two species that you shouldn't mix.
