What can I get so that it is easier for me to change my turtles tank?

KeiKo Jan 21, 2004 03:15 PM

It's really hard for me to change my turtles water. I drain out the water then I have to carry the tank (with someone else) to the bathroom, then pour more water into and drain all that water out. I keep doing this until the water is clear, then after thats done, I carry the tank (with someone) back into the room and then i pour water back into the tank. Then i have to go clean and sanitize the bathroom. All this takes TOO long, and i was wondering what i need to make the process shorter and easier! please help! thanks!!

How about a filter? How big is your turtle tank.

(1) A bigger tank. the larger the water voulme the less often it needs to be changed, very few turtles cabn ve adequately kept in a tank that you can easily carry. It is likely that if you can pick up the turtle tank with water in it, its too small for the turtle.

(2) siphon the water into a bucket. Requires that the tank is well above the ground.

(3) Get a "python no spill clean and fill" A little expensive but very useful. Requires a faucet that can be hooked up to the attachment (most but not all standard house faucets work)comes in several sizes.

Where could I buy a "python no spill clean and fill"? Can I buy it in a store like PetCo or PetsMart? or do I have to buy it online? How much does it cost anyway?

Thanks your advice!!

I have seen them at Petco. I dont know if Petcos in your area will have them or not, but they are available at petco.com. The 25 foot model is $23.39 and the 50 foot model is $38.69 right now.

The link below takes you to Petcos info.

When I first got my turtle (at petco) the lady helped me get what I needed for my turtle. She told me that i needed some gravel, a tank (she gave me a 20 gallon tank), filter (the filter didnt work at all, in total I had to buy three different filters), and a heating lamp. Later on I bought a basking area for my turtle to climb on. When I got my turtle the lady told me to put some of the rocks on the bottom then on one side make a basking. That didnt work so i went and bought a basking area. As for the filter I have now, its not working. So i have to get another one.

Well get used to people in pet stores OFTEN (not always) not knowing what's best for your animal.
A couple of questions for you:

How small is the gravel?
Do you have UVB lights?
Do you have a calcium supplement with vitimin d3?

Keep in mind if you have a credit card and an address, you can buty any reptile product more cheaply on the internet than you can in a pet store in 99 percent of cases.

Im recouperating a RES from a friend who listened to the advice from a petco employee after asking why their turtle wasnt eating. He said they didnt need a water heater and only a basking lamp. I gave my friend a thermometer and their water was 55-60. Since the little RES has been in my tank, he once again learned to swim in big water, and he actively pursues fish and even takes food away from my painteds.

The only amazing thing is that the guy at Petco wasnt trying to sell more equipment than they need. I guess they just really want your turtle to die so youll come buy a leopard gecko instead.

Use a product called Turtle Clean. It's a liquid that you add to the water. It helps bacteria decay waste products. It does a great job of keeping the water clean and keeping it from smelling.
