What to do if attacked by a 'conda

psilocybe Jan 21, 2004 03:48 PM

Found this, thought it was very amusing and thought i'd share it with you 'conda fans...

Reference: Reuters, US Government Peace Corps Manual
The following excerpt is from the US Government Peace Corps Manual for volunteers working in the Amazon Jungle. It details what to do if an anaconda attacks you. Related to the boa constrictor, the anaconda is the largest snake species in the world. It grows to thirty-five feet in length and weighs 300 to 400 pounds.

1. If you are attacked by an anaconda, do not run. The snake is faster than you are.

2. Lie flat on the ground. Put your arms tight against your sides, your legs tight against one another.

3. Tuck your chin in.

4. The snake will begin to nudge and climb over your body.

5. Do not panic.

6. After the snake has examined you, it will begin to swallow you from the feet end - always from the feet end. Permit the snake to swallow your feet and ankles. Do not panic!

7. The snake will now begin to suck your legs into its body. You must lie perfectly still. This will take a long time.

8. When the snake has reached your knees slowly and with as little movement as possible, reach down, take your knife and very gently slide it into the side of the snake's mouth between the edge of its mouth and your leg, then suddenly rip upwards, severing the snake's head.

9. Be sure you have your knife.

10. Be sure your knife is sharp.

` Nah, that is too bloody.
` The government of Faroutistan has recently updated their advice.

` The better way is to wait until the snake gets up to your waist. Make sure you have some fresh ground, very hot, black and white pepper with you. Put the pepper on the snake's nose. It will sneeze you out. If it is a very large, and powerful Anaconda, you might want to maneuver your self to be pointing in the direction you want to go, before applying the pepper.

` Make sure you have oxygen, in case you reach escape velocity!

` Be sure you have the pepper.

` Be sure the pepper is hot.

`She's just waiting for someone from the Peace Corps, yum!

They did kind of leave out that entire bite-and-constrict thing, don't they? And I don't think lying still is going to make a snake think you're dead.

"The serpent crams itself with animal life that is often warm and vibrant, to prolong an existence in which we detect no joy and no emotion. It reveals the depth to which evolution can sink when it takes the downward path and strips animals to the irreducible minimum able to perpetuate a predatory life in its naked horror."

i hope you all know that this is not something i took seriously, haha, but i thought it was pretty funny...considering that chances are the snake will attempt to swallow you HEAD first, instead of by the feet, and the snake will most definately be able to tell you are alive and throw the squeeze, haha. Of course, unless you were swimming in the amazon, chances that a person encountering and actually being in the position of being swallowed by a 'conda is pretty unlikely.
