They are readily sold as wild caught snakes. Particularly in the late winter and early spring when they are easy to catch. People go down into their range and totally destroy the habitat catching them and selling them.
Most of those that are sold won't eat anything other than small skinks. A few of the largest ones will learn to eat pinkies.
Only a few people breed them and the babies are absolutely miniscule. The babies cannot eat a pinkie until they are about 2 years old. They will readily eat ground skinks (the babies are even too small for an adult ground skink!), but they are a real pain. Most people I know who have bred scarlet kings released the babies where they found the adults.
That's why you won't see captive born scarlet kings for sale. They are simply too small to feed.

I have some each year and honestly spend quite a bit of my time at the Daytona show talking people out of buying them. Everyone it seems, wants to get them first without researching thoroughly their needs and all. My list says: "not for beginners" and I can't stress that enough. (not that you're a beginner)If you want a quick reference care sheet, I made one last year to give out, but it by NO means everything you need to know. That said, I am only producing a few this year for sale.

Well i am not a begginer with reptiles but i am looking for a small easy begginer kingsnake or milk snake. And i want it to have the bright red, black, yellow stripes. I had seen the scarlet somewhere and thought that was the one i want but if its as hard for experienced breeders to keep them then i dont stand a chance.any suggestions?
Geez, there's a lot to choose from. Most milks are a bit nervous and flighty as neonates but calm with routine handling in my experience.
Mexican, sinaloan, pueblan, and Nelson's all have the tri-color look. Some with more red, white (yellow) or black than others. Check up on all of 'em and decide what you like best. Keeping is pretty much the same for all the above snakes. There's more of course, but that's a start.

I have hatched them out in the past. I have 2 right now. One is a pretty good eater he will eat mouse tails or small lizards. The other has eaten small anoles but usually refuses them until I can find a ground skink. I say if you can get a steady supply of ground skinks they would be fairly easy to raise. Thatr being said most people don't have a readily available supply of groung skinks. That is what makes it difficult to raise them.

Hey Buddy, What part of FL did those little guys come from? Panhandle by any chance? Thanks-Brett
Oh yeah, to the kingsnake guys, sorry about the inappropriate conversation matter.LOL
