HF molt and defecation problem

boozerR Jan 21, 2004 03:56 PM

Hello everyone! My name is boozerR. I recently acquired an albino cranwell and it molted its first time today. Do horned frogs eat their own molt or should I just take it out? Also, the frog hasn't defecated for about 5 days already and as I've been feeding it 3 1-inch brown crickets everyday. Should I continue feeding it even though it hasn't defecated? This is weird. It can't be impaction because I don't have gravel in my tank.

HF dont molt so to speak. The shed and eat their skin. Youll notice them taking their legs and arms and scratchign themselves and then they will put their feet into their mouth and eat the skin.

As for your pacman not eating, i wouldt worry to much about it. Sometimes mine dont go for a week. Sometimes they go 3 times in a week. Make sure your setup is correct. When asking about a problem its always nice to give us a background on how the cage is setup and what not so everyone can determine if the surroundings are adequate or if they might be the cause of the problem.

Just keep an eye on him, he might have went already and you ust havent seen it. You will notice it soon, it will turn all fuzzy white. haha

oogieboogie,

You've mentioned something "fuzzy and white." Do you mean its crap or shed skin? Also, your frog sometimes doesn't take a dump for a week or not eat for a week? I'm not surrre wat you meant. Thanks for your response and plz reply!!!

If the frog goes poop and you do not see it, for example if it get burried slightly, in time it will start to get fuzzy and moldy. It will stick out like a sore thumb.

My frog, depending on how long ago it ate and how much, might not go to the bathroom that often. Ive seen him gobble down several nightcrawlers and a few crickets in a week and he will go alot, or sometimes he wont eat that much and wont go as often.

Just keep an eye on him and fish around for the poop, a sure sign that he went to the poop is if he gets up and moves. Every time mine does that (unless its to eat) he has gone to teh bathroom. Just sometimes it gets burried when he moves.

Holy - Thats like saying if humans eat food that will kill them, let them die. If that were the case we would all be dead! I eat fast food every day, im so unhealthy. *lol* They dont eat it because they want to, it just gets sucked up in their mouth when they go for the real food. o)

As for what RaderRVT said, watch out for that too. Its definetly a possability that you dont want to rule out. Like I said, just watch him closely.

Good Luck

"Holy - Thats like saying if humans eat food that will kill them, let them die. If that were the case we would all be dead!"

No, it's not like that at all. Impaction is caused by eating foreign objects that can't be digested or not easily digested like gravel, right? When it comes to beddings, it can be caused by too much intake of it but I'm sure just a small amount of bedding intake wouldn't hurt the frog. In the wild, I'm sure they accidentaly eat moss too but that doesn't really cause them to die or get sick because if so, then frogs would be extinct.
when it comes to bedding intake, the only reason it could cause impaction is if the frog ate too much of it and the only way it could happen is if the frog deliberately eat that much or the frog is extremely dumb. If so, then that frog deserves to die because even in the wild, it would kill himself.

As for humans, um, I'm sure he knows what can kill him from not. If he eats something that could kill him, there could be a ton of reasons and one of them could be that he wants to committ suicide. If he wants to die then let him.

I realize that's a bit harsh but we can't just constantly worry about our frogs health 24/7. We try to provide the best environment and give them foods, the least they can do is not to kill themselves by eating too much bedding.

Actually its exactly the same.

*One* piece of bark can cause impaction. And the frogs do not eat the substrate on purpose, if you belive that you need to go do some reserch and learn alot more about frogs. ;oP

As for humans, its the exact same. We eat foods *every day* that cause harm to our body. Fatty foods, high colestoral, high carbs, etc etc etc... Do we know that they are bad for us? Ofcorse we do! Does eating *one* fatty food cause us to die? No, but eating a constant diet of that will. And we do that knowingly. What do you think causes hear attacks, or high blood pressure? US eating bad food and being unhealthy.

So by your logic... If we are dumb enough to eat the foods we do, we deserve to die? Better rethink that philosphy there girl. o)

First off, PEOPLE! I'M not A GIRL!!!

Human's actions has it's consequences. He wants to eat Unhealthy foods even knowing of its consequences then it's by his choice. If he thinks that eating unhealthy foods weigh more than having a longer life, then fine. He put that to himself. It's unfair for other people who tries to eat healthy food if they will end up like the people who doesn't care at all. All man's actions has it's consequences and it is by his choice and judgement if he'll do it or not, what weighs more for him.

As for the frog thing, yes, I know that they don't intentionally eat beddings. If they accidentally eat a piece of it, it would be occasional and a small amount that couldn't possibly kill them. What could kill them is too much intake of it, which could only happen if they delibaretely do that on purpose or are extremely retarded. If it's by the Frog's choice to die, then let him.

First of *girl* is just a generic term I use, was not meant to be taken offensively. Ill use woman from now on hehe.

No matter what you think, they do not eat it on purpose. If that was the case when your frog was hungry, it would simply eat substrate. But they do not do that.

And as you said, yes humans do have a choice on what they eat. They can consciously choose what to eat and what not to. Frogs on the other hand do not (not to the ability we do), the shoot their lil tounge out and what ever gets caught along with their food they eat.

Most of the time you will see the frog try and kick out the substrate he/she is eating. Sometimes however they cannot get it out and it gets swallowed. And yes a small piece can cause impaction, it all depends on the frog. And a lil piece every time the eat *adds* up since it will not be digested.

Trust me holy, they do *not* eat it on purpose. No frog does. And the fact that you think you should let them die leads me to be glad im no pet of yours. O)

Do you let the little kid that wants to touch the bon fire walk into the bonfire? Or do you let the little kid that wants to go in the pool go to the pool knowing he cant swim?

I sure hope not *woman* hehehe

Anywho i saw in another post you guys talking about getting thigns that your afraid of. I just bought myself a Tarantula and im extremely phobic of them. I must say it is helping me get over it though.

My Reply...

We are talking about the possibility of a frog dying with impaction if it ate too much of its substrate and here is my reply to that:

"If they accidentally eat a piece of it, it would be occasional and a small amount that couldn't possibly kill them. What could kill them is too much intake of it, which could only happen if they delibaretely do that on purpose... "
And your's:
"Trust me holy, they do *not* eat it on purpose. No frog does..."

And yes, I know frogs don't eat substrate on purpose so stop saying I think that. What I'm trying to say is, a small amount of substrate intake, of course it also depends on the substrate, couldn't possibly hurt the frog because even in the wild they occasionally and accidentally eat something besides their prey. The only possible reason the frog could die by substrate intake is if it delibaretely ate it thus having too much of it inside its body, which will not do by the frog. I'm just using that "eating on purpose" to establish my point that with proper substrate, the owner of the frog shouldn't be worying too much because it's near impossibility that a frog will die from it because the frog will surely not eat the substrate on purpose but if it does, it will only be ocasinal and accidental. "a small amount that couldn't possibly kill them." AGAIN, I don't think that frogs eat their substrate on purpose.

Oh man, what has kingsnake turned in to...

Why are you comparing frogs to humans? Why are comparing frogs in captivity, to the ones in the wild? How much smarter are we compared to amphibians? They dont realise what they are doing can lead to an impaction, we do.

Frogs hunt by motion, thats their key to survival. Anything that moves, is eaten. If the food jumps out of the way before it is catched, the frog may eat the substrate instead. Maybe coconut fiber pass through easily, but not bark.

Also, you cannot compare whatever you have in a small ten gallon inside your house, to the vast amount of forests they have outside. Thats impossible. No matter what you think how natural your enclosure is, it still doesnt compare to what they encounter in the wild. Dont you use the packaged sphagnum moss found at pet stores? Please name a place with 100% of that material as floor space. I'd like to hear it.

M.N

oogieboogie Jan 22, 2004 04:22 PM

Moe88 - Gotta read all the threads to understand what we are talkign about. We were not comparing frogs to humans so to speak. I was comparing the fact that humans choose to eat food that is bad for them out of free will, unlike a frog who accidentally might ingest a piece of substrate that could be harmful.

holy - I think its time we just stop. I can go back and quote every word you said to prove my point but its a dumb argument. I suggest we just let it die.

Now that I think back about your reply, "And the frogs do not eat the substrate on purpose"... I didn't say frogs eat substrates on purpose. You put those words in my mouth.

As for people (although very irrelevenat), every Person has to choose of what he'll do in everything and that action often has consequences attached to it. that's the law of life. If he wants to eat unhealthy foods because it makes him happy or that's the only available thing, then he made his choice but he still has to face its consequences. Nothing wrong with that. That's just how life works.

As frog owners, it's our responsibility to not include hazardous things on our terrariums! Any owner who puts rocks or anything that can get swallowed easily (and I'm not talking about easily-passed coco fiber) is... well... uneducated. Who can disagree on this?

It can't be impaction because I don't have gravel in my tank.

Impaction can be caused by almost anything, not just gravel. I have seen a tiger salamander die from an impaction from coconut fiber.

It is pretty sad that people have to argue amongst themselves, rather than answer the original question. I apologise; this board is usually more informative than melodramatic.

It is normal for your frog to go awhile without defecating. If he is otherwise fat and healthy, then I doubt anything is wrong. Mine actually goes weeks without crapping sometimes.

Signs of impaction include "doubling up", contorting, basically looking like the frog is trying to force something out its butt. If your frog is just sitting around, burying itself, then things sound good.

I always remove any uneaten skin after a shed. They only eat it if it happens to go in the mouth while shedding.
Any other questions, just ask.
