adult corn rack tub size?

IcedGoddess Jan 21, 2004 05:12 PM

I just bought 8 boxes at fleet farm today, for only 4$ a piece. But I'm afraid they may be too small for my adults.

What size boxes do you all use? These are 24x12x7h I know they'll work great for the yearlings, but is that too small for a four footer?

You might get a lot of different opinions but my opinion is that its too small for an adult. Ideally bigger is better since they'll have more room to move around. I would also imagine that a 12" by 24" area (288 sq inches of floor space) would cause a little stress being so confined. I'm sure lots of people do it, but I prefer as much room as possible. I think they have rubbermaids in 16"x30" which would add appx 200 more square inches of floor space if I did the math correctly..LOL
A regular 20 gallon tank measures about 12"x12"x30 so that's about 360 sq inches of floor space. I think you're right that it will work for yearlings but after they grow a little bigger, I'd try to give them more floor space.

I know corns aren't arboreal, but they are good climbers and even having more height may make for a better enclosure...although not as practical for a rack, but I've seen it done (especially for chondros and JCPs)

I use 2 sizes for adults. For yearlings through small adults, I use Rubbermaids that are 16x22. For larger adults I use 18x26 Cambor boxes.

I like the Cambro boxes for breeding pairs because they're as clear as glass

that's a great pic, I wish I coulda cought one like that of my pair last year. Maybe if I can get my anery interested in girls (he's only a year but he tries)!

how deep are those cabro boxes? they look shallow? The clarity is great!

The cambros come in various depths, I use the 3" & 6", but they come in depths up to 18". They have pretty secure snap-on lids which ad another 1" or more.

cool, now i have to look for those. I think I'm ganna go ahead and return the boxes I bought yesterday, I want everyone in the same size boxes for a change! My babies would probably love what I bought, but I think my snow would feel ripped off going from a 20-long to a smaller box. UHG! I may never get this rack done!

You'reright, if you order them from Cambro.com they're something like $36 each but if you can find a local restaurant supply company that carries them, you'll get better prices. Last year a friend of mine bought them by the case (10 per case?) from a store here in Chicago and they averaged about $20 per box that way.

Here's the 6" deep 18x26 box with 1" deep lid...

I don't heat the racks, I heat the whole room.
