Hatchling Coastal Carpet starved itself to death, is this common?

SeanL Jan 21, 2004 06:14 PM

I bought a CCP hatchling about eight months ago tried to feed him for about six weeks, nothing. He drank but wouldnt eat. The snake guy at the store force fed him every two weeks for six weeks to keep him going he was looking prity puny by then. Plus I tried to get him to eat, no go. Finally I had enough and traded him back to the store for a Columbian Boa. The snake guy said he would work with him. I spoke to him about three months ago. He said he force fed him for about two months and he still wouldnt eat on his own. Finally he stoped force feeding but offered food regularly it still wouldnt eat. It eventually starved itself to death. Is this common in CCP hatchlings or did I just get unlucky and get the one who was suicidal? I hope thats the case because I would love to own anouther one. Thanks SeanL P.S. My Boa is doing great couldnt ask for more.

Its the first case of starvation I've ever heard of myself. I have 4 coastals at home and my only issue is getting them to stop eating. LOL! Some Carpet youngsters can be picky at first but with the right set up they usually come around after a month or so...I'd say its a bit of a fluke. I wonder what the issue could have been. If you keep you eye out for a well-started coastal this next time around you should be fine. Once they do start they don't stop.

I agree with Darci. Next time make sure the snake is well-started. Buying a non-feeder is breaking the first rule of buying a snake.

Yeah, I know . Stupid me, I asked if he was eating and the guy told me no but he had just had his first shed so he should eat soon, so I bought him anyway. Well he was wrong, luckily the store manager backes up there animals and let me do a tradein. Lesson learned. Sean L.
