Very Uncomfortable Mom to be

eve Jan 21, 2004 07:01 PM

This is Suess, a female emerald swift, very dark, I took this yesterday morning when she got up, and shes also going to shed !

But shes also going to be a Mom in March so she has a ways to go before delivery ! And she looks uncomfortable now, very big, eating like crazy ! Shes about 7 months now , poor thing !

It seems those that bear live young really swell up--- guess it goes with the territory. I guess Emeralds are easy to raise since they like moderate temps. Its nice that they don't require high heat like the desert critters do------ saves on the energy bill!!

of having them. And the offspring don't do well for most people.

I think why emeralds don't do well in captivity, is that people tend to keep them too hot. You were smart in saying moderate.

Some care sheets say 85 - 90 basking ! I lost one few years back, doing that. I now keep them much cooler. And mist down their tank in the morning and again at night.

I have had the male for 2 years and got her last summer. They are doing well.

So now I will see how the babies do , soon !
