Taming Uros?

AzLunchbox Jan 21, 2004 09:21 PM

hi everyone.....i've only had Uro's for about a month.....and my female seems very unfriendly......when i try to pick her up....she runs......when i actually do pick her up.......she tail whips me.
and when i get near her in the cage or touch her on her back she starts doing this swaying back and forth type dance looking thing that i'm guessing is a defensive stance.

anyways i was wondering what is a good way to break her of her habits and get her to be more friendly?
any advice will help

Thanks,

-Matt-

Mostly time. I too fretted about my wild yellow female. Time to acclimate and adjust has been the most beneficial. How's your set-up? Hide spots alright? If she has a good appitite you can try an occasional mealworm from yor hand. This may lessen her feelings of percieved threat from you. There again... she may just remain unrulely.
Good Luck

My setup is a 60 gallon tank....basking spot at about 120....going up and down by about 10 degrees depending on what part of it they're on......
a hide half log thing under the basking site.....a hide house on the cool side........and a big rock that the female likes to dig behind in the other corner of the cool side.

a few rocks spread throught the middle....a food bowl......a seed bowl......and yeah i think that mainly covers it.

but yeah i'll have to just keep working on her...she does accept treats like waxworms or mealworms.......but only if i'm holding it in a pair of needlenose pliars that i have.....she doesn't like me getting any closer to her then that. heh.

I have four Saharans 2.2. I also "saved" another yellow male who now lives with my nephews and their two females. All of them have been WC, but my four were always extremely outgoing and social (and spoiled!) The saved male--he did a lot of that hiding and tail whipping while I had him. I know other people here will disagree with me and say give them space, etc. I'm a toughy-feely person, so I can't leave them alone. The male calmed down considerably after he was handled every day--sometimes multiple times/day. I carried him around on my the front of my shirt or he climbed on my shoulder peeking through my hair. I think the more you handle them the more they get used to it and you. Yes, your hands might take a bit of a beating from that tail, but that's not that bad and it heals. Took a little bit for all of my uros to actually take food out of my hand directly, but now--I need to watch my fingers!
