zimbo Jan 21, 2004 10:03 PM

today i noticed the newt i was given looks like his skin is coming off and his little feet look whiteish pink, almost looks like bone. but where he used to be black, it looks like his skin is rubbing off, or rotting or something. also, his back leg looks like it might have bone poking out, although it may just be the same rotting-ish stuff. someone please tell me what to do, advise somehow... there is not a newt vet ANYWHERE around here.. please help thanks

Any tank mates? Sounds like his feet are getting chewed on... If there are other animals housed w/ him, seperate him immediately. You can wash the wounds w/ hydrogen peroxide, use antibiotic ointment on them (w/o pain reliever, lidocaine is deadly to newts). You can even use fish tetracycline tabs in his water. Keep the water clean. Feed him regularly. The missing parts will grow back w/in about a month in my experience. Best of luck!

Not sure about the break. Not sure there's anything you can really do about it, but maybe others will have advice. I'd seperate the newts & toad. The toad likely caused the injury & will continue 'till your newts are dead. They're actually not compatible species, despite the fact that many pet stores keep them together. In addition to aggression, each can secrete toxins which are toxic to the other.

wow. i wasnt aware of this. right now there is 1 toad and 2 newts, should i house the newts seperately also? do you think he will die? could he live without that leg?

You should keep each species seperately, toads in one tank, newts in another. I unfortunately lost one newt & one newt's leg when I had African Dwarf Frogs in w/ my firebelly newts. It's just a bad idea to mix species. It's very possible he'll live. Mine did. Just pamper him & keep the wound clean. I kept mine aquatic while he healed, w/ just one small spot to get out of the water, so he had to soak in the Tetracycline.
