Veiled cage ?'s making sure i do this right

deuce02 Jan 21, 2004 11:20 PM

OK, so IM really close to ordering my veiled pair. Heres what IM planning for the cage set up.

First)
I was informed that a male and female dont do well together in same cage? (even if its large) Is this true?

Second)
Cage size ~ Each would have its own cage at 30"Wx36"Hx24"D That's if I keep them separate. If its together its the same height and depth just double the length (both enclosures will be in 1 large just separate chambers)

Third)
Lighting ~ IM looking at a single 28" reptisun 5.0 bulb, 50-75 watt heating lamp and a second florescent light source for each cage. Or everything listed for single large cage.

Fourth)
Plants ~ what are some good house plants I can find at say lowes or home depot that would do veiled well? I have a grape vine in the back yard so vines are no problem, so plenty to climb.

Any other ideas I missed that would help please feel free. I will have them by next Wednesday the 28th so I need as much input as possible so I can have it ready by the end of the week.

Yeah, unless you want to get in to breeding, egglaying, young-raising, etc., you'd better separate them.

Ficus Benjamina (ficus tree) is a good plant. So is pothos (climbing ivy).

I just have one Ficus Benjamina in my 24x24x48" cage, and a few sticks scattered throughout. You may want to cut a piece of plexi glass or plastic for the bottom of the cage, so you don't soak the floor when spraying.

One 28" UV bulb is good, however, they are no brighter than the 15" bulbs. They are actually a little less bright if you ask me.

And if you get anything from outside (vines), soak them in bleach water for a while, or bake them in the oven at around 130 degrees. This will kill any mites or other parastitic bugs that may have infested them.

best of luck!

Don't put them together even if the enclosure is huge seeing another cham wil stress them shortening their life quickly. YOu shouldn't even have the cages in viewof each other.
Plants: Dwarf umbrlla and hibiscus work well you may wanna be careful about ficus trees, they have a milky sap wich can give people rashs and can irritate a chams eyes if they get any near them.

The cages will be set as 1 large enclosure but seperate cages. they will not be able to see each other at all! does anyone here think the cage size i have posted would be suitable? Each will see 30"Wx36Hx24D What do you think? also, where can i find good plants? i went to home depot and lowes and neither have much since its 0 degrees and snowing. GOD I HATE WINTER! any ways, any good online sites or something?!?
thanks
