Unexpectedly lost my hybrid female yellowhead last night...

Johne Jan 22, 2004 08:37 AM

This girl was doing exceptionally well, which made it a huge surpise that she suddenly fell ill. I noticed a couple nights ago that she was walking a bit awkard, and her rear legs were looking skinny...despite the fact she had been eating and drinking regularly, and just shedd.

My kids went in the basement when I got home from work yesterday and came up to tell me one of my lizards was dead. I had a feeling it could have been Azul, since he had been breathing heavier than normal lately. To my surprise, it was the hybrid yellowhead known as "Moweqa." My daughter namer her, and was very upset with this. This kind of sucks...No bluegill will be a lonely guy.

Something very strange, was how emaciated she got overnight. She did not look dehyrated at all the night before, when I noticed her awkward walking. Yesterday, her tail was badly dehydrated, as well as her back and head. I had a dish of shallow water, as well as have been dripping water in the cage into the dish daily. I see her drink often too...very weird.

but it sounds very similiar to what happens when ive bought WC collareds from the petstore out my way,In the shop they seemed fit and healthy but within days of getting them home they had deflated and sunk in hips also i might add that the petstore does not give them basking lights so i know there living in the high 70's and not optimum temps, what gets me is when i get them and heat them up they seem to shrivel up and die on me.Again so sorry to hear of your loss john.

another incandescent or two to my tanks. One thing I didn't reall consider was the basement may be slightly coolor than normal, and not getting adequate heat transfer with my two lights. Could have an effect on all my lizard that I don't want to find out with.

Thanks for the condolensces, or however you spell it.. :P

often, and bluegill , we were just talking in email about them the other day !

I'm quite shocked also. You did not seem as though there was anything to worry about, except beefing a couple up.

Such a shame, pretty little girl too, what a bummer.
I'm sure it was a real sad find for you and the kids !

As far as Bluegill, well I'm fairly sure I will have yellowheads from one of the several pairs I have.

KInky, and Chinook have been asleep for awhile.
And Kewanee and Tonto slept too a short time.
So if Blue gill don't mind a pretty yeller lady and you want one, than one will have your name on it !!!

Again So sorry, I liked Moweqa, I remember the day we both were looking at them and you bought first, BUT I was still HAPPY it was you that got them. LOL
Talk later,
Eve

Bluegill would still have all his tail, and Moweqa would be fine!! I think she has never been the same since the kids pulled her out from under the refrigerator. She has never quite been right. I will get more lights tonight, and give them their UTH Back.

but yes, I remember you telling me the day she was pulled out by the kids from under there, that she was not acting well. Think you emailed me that night and said something seemed wrong.

But them after awhile you figured she was okay !

Sad !

It was not shedding very good, because the scalation was a bit distorted, so skin would not come off in one piece. She was eating great for the last month, and looked fine. She was not even one of my skinny ones :P

...Really sorry to hear that John. I've had a couple of 'health brushfires' to put out around here too. The night time ambients have really plunged here, and my fave yellowhead male (Sampson) started showing some signs of respiratory problems a while back. I've had to take the night temps up on all the UTH's almost 10 degrees to keep everyone flying level. Damned arctic wasteland.
I've already trashed the first battery on my temp gun LOL. Where the heck is all that Global Warming Al Gore keeps promising us?

I wonder how she could have dehydrated so quickly.

It always hurts to lose an animal in our care, although herp husbandry still has a ways to go before it's as predictable as dog and cat care. My sympathies. I had a sick collared several years ago, and my herp vet suggested placing him in a shallow dish of lukewarm water. It worked, and he stayed pretty well hydrated, although eventually died from just being overwhelmed by his illness. Anyway, cloacal uptake of water in lizards is apparrently an important aspect of hydration even in healthy animals, and occasional soakings in about 1/2 inch of clean, lukewarm aged tap or commercial drinking water are believed to be a good idea. No pure distilled water, though, as it has been linked to dilution of dissolved calcium in the bloodstream and subsequent osmotic loss of bone calcium. Use clean water with some mineral content.

Hi Johne,

I wanted to reply to your post last night but I was having trouble logging in. I am new to the forum but I have been raising Collared Lizards and breeding them for some time now. Anyway I am also sorry you lost one of your females like that. From what you and DC described, I believe your female developed a respiratory/pheumonia infection. I'm not a Veterinarian but I had the same type of thing happen a couple of years ago and it happened so fast shortly after I brought them out of brumation. Suddenly lost appetite, weight, un-normal deep breathing, excessive mucus in the mouth, throat and nostrils. From all that I lost 4 of them within a couple of days from that infection and could only save 1 of them out of those 5. The one that lived I had to give her a daily liquid anti-biotic (and raise the temperature to 105 degrees and keeping the nighttime temp around 90 degrees per the Vet for 30 days) from the Vet for 30 days. The anti-biotics didn't work on the other 4 because they just got too weak too quickly. I never figured out if it was contagious or not but I honoestly believe it was pheumonia from the house I was living in at the time during the brumation period. The room I was keeping them in did not have a constant temperature where it kept rising too warm in the day from the Sun heating that side of the house and then it would get cold at night instead of a constant cool temperature in the room, which affected their enclosure temp where they were sleeping. Anyway nice to meet you Johne and just some thoughts from me from my experience and again sorry about your loss. Jeff
