Fed her sooner than I thought

Sasheena Jun 06, 2003 01:29 PM

Well I was going to wait and feed my little Dreamer a week after getting her. Was cleaning mouse cages when one of the tiniest hoppers bit me. I don't much care for bitey mice, and the hopper was tiny, and a male... so I thought, why not. I put it in the cage with the little girl, ready to pull it if she appeared frightened or disinterested. Just wanted to see if I would get an immediate feeding reaction and BOY did I! She snapped up that hopper quicker than I could have second thoughts about feeding her.

I hope this means that she will be a regular feeder, especially if the breeder was either force feeding or assist feeding pinkies.

In the meantime I've given her peace and quiet so she can digest and relax and hopefully keep her meal down. (I don't think she has a record of regurging).

From what I've read on postings here Jungles prefere mice over rats. The challenge may be getting her to accept rats as food. The suggestion given over and over is to start them out young. So don't relax until she starts eating rats on a regular basis.

Yes, I know that it is hard to get them to switch. But I produce probably 100 extra mice every three weeks, and don't currently raise rats. So the mouse vs rats issue isn't something that I feel a huge pressure about at the moment. Once I start raising rats I'll work towards switching her and others of my snakes to rats. And if she doesn't accept rats, I don't mind needing to feed five mice as the mice are "free" in that I sell enough mice to pay for all of their food and bedding.
