New member with questions.....

bluefrog Jan 22, 2004 11:00 AM

Hi, I am a newbie here. I've been researching intensely for a few days and will possibly acquire my first leo on the 31st at the All Ohio Rep Expo. Anyway, I was wondering if leos like to climb (I haven't seen any info on that). I already have a cage and made a little hidey cave from a large yogurt container for starters. But I was wondering if I should also place a branch or one of those grapevines in the cage. (I assume from their natural environment that they aren't big-time climbers, but thought maybe they did climb some???) Also- I've been reading the threads here and was wondering why you all have numbers next to your critters. Thought these were like genetic codes, but some looked a little funny (such as numbers next to cats..??) And the last question is, what does n/p mean? I thought 'no problem', but it seems out of context....Thanks for your help.

Some leos like to climb, if you do put branches and things make sure you have a lid or they can climb out (some leos apparently like to jump). The numbers mean the number of males, number of females, and number of unsexed geckos you have, so if I say 1.1.0, I have 1 male, and 1 female, and no unsexed, or if I say I have 1.0.0 geckos, I have 1 male and nothing else.

n/p means no post, or in other words don't click on it because there's nothing in the body of the message.

also, you need more than one hide...look up a good caresheet...or I'm sure someone else will tell you all you need to konw...i'm too tired to type it all...I just woke up a little while ago....lol

Thanks...And yes, I know about having two hides- the margarine is almost gone

One other question- what do leo owners prefer as far as heat sources. Should I get an under tank heat pad, or a CHE clip on thing? Or both? I am planning on having a screen top on a 10 gal. with one leo. The CHE clip-on might pose a challenge since there will be a top on the tank....(Have to have a screen top due to our cat plus I want to incorporate a climbing object.)

Some leos do like to climb and others don't. If you've never held one before, you'll notice right away that they do have small claws on the ends of their toes. One of leos is very ground-based, while the other is more adventurous. In our tank, we attached some mesh to one side (on the right) that they can climb on, plus there is the branch and the hides that they are always behind, above, under, ...... (pardon the glare on the picture)

That is one spiffy leo tank :P

How many gallons is it?

It's a 20L for 2 leos. Much of what's in there was hand-fashioned using an exacto knife, popsicle sticks, and a hot glue gun. We call it a MacGyver special. =)

You could probably put like 4 or 5 in there considering its multi level :P

Do they actually go up?

suzywoolf Jan 22, 2004 09:41 PM

One little guy climbs up and down several times a day. The other one, the little fatty, only gets about halfway up the mesh and heads straight back down. Maybe he's afraid of heights. Or he just can't lug his caboose any longer.

That is very cool! I almost expected to see some tiny Ewoks climbing around in there Thanks for sharing the photo, it gives me some ideas.

suzywoolf Jan 22, 2004 09:42 PM

There WERE some Ewoks, but our fearsome gex quickly overpowered them and had themselves a tasty snack. Yum, yum... better than pinkies! =)

I really like your setup! If Indian Jones were a gecko, he’d be right at home in your tank. I bet your leos have lots of adventures, when your not watching them of course J

How long did that take you to make?
