After I take off the pricklies, I cube it in bite size pieces. Also, you can leave the pad in whole if you go away on vacation for a day to two. It will keep better if left whole. That's just a little tip from Doug Dix.
I haven't tried kidney beans - but my uro's like lima beans.

I feed cactus to my iguanas and torts. I burn the prickers off (found that was the best way to be sure they are all gone) with a torch and then depending on who is getting it I vary between whole, cubed and shredded.

Laura-
My uros love ground beans and raw, dry lentils. However, kidney beans aren't the best choice as they have a high amount of phosphorus and have moderate oxelates (meaning double whammy for calcium loss). Most other types of beans can be used though.

thanx for the heads up on the kidney beans. i didn't know that they are not such a good choice. advice from you guys really helps as i am new to uro keeping. how often should food be offered? ZION has not been eating every day but i heard that they should be fed maybe twice a week. how true is this? laura
I feed greens once a day and have a separate dish of dry foods at all times. I've heard other ideas, though, that sound relatively sensible. If you feed every other day, for example, the gut has a chance to empty its contents more completely before adding more, which might allow for better digestion and have less chance of infection in the gut. I don't know if this is true, but it's one thing I've heard.
