with lots of hides, they get along fine and there is no competition for space since its big enough
I wouldn't really want to put another in there though. Its just right.

I also have a 30 gallon, same floor space, housing a juvenile male. When he's big enough he might get a female roomate

I've been told that 3 in a 20 gallon is fine...so I'd think 5...maybe 6 would be ok in a 30.

Man I went by petco today, makes me feel bad, had 4 in a 10 gallon... with one hide... and they stared at me like they wanted out...

though floor area is more important than height. A 20L has the same floor area as a 30H, but a 30L will have more floor area. So it depends on the volume of your tank, yes, but also on the dimensions. I have 2 in a 20L, could probably have another, but wouldn't really want more than that. Also you probably won't want to have (many) more animals than you have hides, since they'll wander from place to place to thermoregulate, and there's nothing worse than going to your favorite carrel in the library to study and someone's already there.
