Need springtails

nickmorin Jan 22, 2004 03:01 PM

HI,

I was wondering if anyone could tell where I could get some springtails. Ed's says they won't ship due to the weather and I don't know of any other suppliers who sell them.

Thanks,
Nick

You can get some yourself. Here is what i am going to do. Its too cold right now for me to do but its not too cold for the springtail. Go around some area with a lot of leaf litter (forest perserves are nice). Grab a shovel or a small hand shovel(might have to dig deeper because it is cold)and dig some soil into a jar. Go home put the soil in a funnel (can make one of an old pop bottle if you want). Place the funnel on top of a jar to collect the springtail. Put some fresh leaves on top of the soil, spray with water. Let it sit for a day. Put the entire apparatus unlike a lamp. The heat should cause the leaves to dry and should cause the springtails to go into the jar.

Not sure how cold it is by your place, but springtails can survive in winter depending on how lucky they are. So this might or might not work. If you have some house plant you can use those soil too. Chances are there might be some springtails in there too.
