Floating snapping turtle

SalS Jan 22, 2004 03:44 PM

I found my Fl. Snapper floating with his rear out of the water this morning, like in the picture. His was was extremely dirty after being completely changed out 2 days ago. I did give him about 6 shiners yesterday. I changed his water again today and while he was out, he was able to walk around. The turtle is usually extremely aggressive but isn't today. I'm sure something is wrong but don't know what and most importantly, don't know how to fix it.

Any ideas?

One of my snappers did this a couple months ago. I walked in after giving them some rosie reds and beefheart, and he was floating. I raised the temp in his water and cleaned it, and waited a day or two, plus I changed his diet a little to see what would happen. Two days later, he wasnt floating anymore.
The vet said it could be from the fish. Now everyonce in a while he does it after a large meal.

Our other vet said it could be gas....

Thanks for the advice but, I had already tried searching the forum for the specific information I am seeking.

I should have elaborated. I'm looking for information on the growth rate of alligator snappers (captive vs. wild) primarily. Read that someone has a 19 inch snapper that weighs x#pounds isnt really helping me.

Anyone else?

I had a fecal test done and it showed up negative. After a few days the turtle returned to his normal aggressive, submerged self. I guess he had bad gas or something. I just found it really strange that it affected his behavior as well.
