should i get a tank mate for my firbelly?

Why not let the dust settle for a bit before you consider a tank mate? You're not sure what the other newt died from, and with the chance of this one possibly also being infected...I'd wait at least a month before introducing another.

the toad ate his legs... it was confirmed. they have since been seperated. considering this what do you think?

As long as there are not too many newts for the space you have. They appear to be just as happy alone as they are with a buddy or two. It's really up to you.
