Mealworm Beetles Fly?

paradisio Jan 22, 2004 04:20 PM

I read one post saying you don't need to keep lids on the breeding container, this would sure make it easy to keep track on them, but I also hear the beetles fly... Any help is appreciated...

BTW how fast do they breed? I only need enough for 5 geckos, will one or two tubs full be enough?

Also what size mealies should I buy? Or the larger sizes just older? I will be feeding 2 adults and a hatchling so I need a size variety probably

Yes they can fly.

not sure about superworm though. they can jump pretty far and like 5 or 6 inches up.
I would put a lid on anything just in case though.

I've seen mealworm beetles fly, not alot or all the time, but if they want to they will.

I raise both kingworms and regular mealworms by the thousands, and neither beetles nore worms can jump. Kingworm worms can wiggle quickly and get a little altitude doint this, maybe 1/2 inch max.

Beetles can fly, but they can't gain elevation quickly, so a fairly short container with even low sides will keep them in. Put them on a level surface with no sides, and they can then fly around the room, but I don't know why you would do that!
