Turtle not cham but someone here might know.

anson Jan 22, 2004 05:31 PM

A friend just gave me this turtle that someone no longer wanted.
Does anyone know what it is.
I have not named it yet.
Does anyone know of a care sheet or site with info.
It will go in my 75 gallon tank with a UVB and basking light but any care info is appreciated since I do not have turtle experience.

Can't say for sure but looks kinda like a map turtle. False map turtles have very destictive markings as babies, and map turtles have somewhat less destinctive markings which fade as they grow up. I can't tell the size of it, but it is some sort of basking turtle (like sliders) and I think it looks like a north american turtle, so take care of it similar to a painted turtle or red eared slider. What you described sounds good. Feed it worms, crickets, grasshoppers, crawfish, and live fish (some of these are seasonal). Good luck with it!

looks to me to be a juvenile sawshell turtle

and said it is a North American turtle from Mississippi and Alabama but did not know what kind.
What about supplementing them. I guess you can't "dust" their food. Does it need some kind of vitamins.
I tried the turtle forum but it is kind of slow and I haven't got an answer yet.

I looked up map turtle and there were several subspecies which looked like that but I could not tell which one it is.
There were three or four that were very similar.
I also have not found detailed care sheets they were all pretty vague.
