GF2003 Jan 22, 2004 06:01 PM

Does home depot sell tropical plants all year round? Say, if i go to HD right now, will it be possible to purchase broms, and ferns?

They might, hard to tell, but they normally have some nice plants.

They will most definately have assorted tropicals plants and some bromeliads. To get the really good looking bromeliads you usually have to pick from a recently delivered load. This time of the year they probably don't get too many, but its worth checking. They will definately have assorted tropical plants though. Good luck.

Actually this is the best time of the year to find tropical plants, including orchids and bromeliads. Lowe's and Walmart have been getting several shipments including some of the more unusual and hard to find stuff like cryptanthus. Another great thing is if you wait a week, they invariably forget to water the plants and they slightly wilt or lose their flower, then they mark it down to a $1. I have gotten perfectly helathy bromeliads that just were no longer flowering. Last year my husband bought like 6 orchids form Walmart for $4 that were not in bloom and they started blooming after a week of good care and din't stop for several months. Now they are starting to bloom again.

This really all depends on where you live.

The only really good plants I have bought at Home Depots in AZ are carnivorous. Their selection of bromeliads and tropicals is horrible. They won't mark down the orchids after bloom as they "get credit from the grower".

Lowe's, however, has marked down orchids for me; Walmart as well ($1 each after Easter last year). The Walmarts here always have multiple species of Rhipsalis (epiphytic "jungle cactus".
