Anyone in N.C.???????????????????

eric adrignola Jun 06, 2003 02:01 PM

I have 2 sulcatas, and I really love the guys. I am however, neglecting them. I have just gotten married, and moved into a new house. I used to live with my parents, and they had several acres. I now live in a more suburban setting, and don't have space to let them roam. I'm about to build them a nicer indoor area, complete with Mercury Vapor bulbs and everything, but I really wish better for them. I do not want to give them up, but I would consider it if I knew there was someone who would have the ability to give them a "free-run" type of environment. I know a local zoo, and they would probably take them, but I don't want to do that. I really love them, but I think that they're a bit neglected because I have been so busy(working 12 hours a day for the past few weeks!) Me and my wife will have a fence put in before next year, but I feel bad keeping them in a small cage for now.
--Don't get me wrong, I did my research. They are 7' and 12' long. If they were about twice the size, I'd keep them at my parents, they could stay outside for the summer.
I see myself devoting most of my little time to my chameleons, the torts require totally different, specialized care, and I 'm finding it a bit difficult to provide them with what I would like to. they are not being neglected in the sense we normally think-they eat well, lots of roughage, timothy, a bit of greens and fresh grass, flowers, etc. they have a decent sized pen to move around in.

I just posted some a bit further down.

if they did take sulcatas, there'd be a million there. Your sulcatas
are both still little, as you are realizing they are a lot of work.
I'm not sure what you're asking in your post - are you looking to
get rid of them? There are adoption agencies that might be able
to help.

Well, I didn't clarify...I KNOW a zoo. My brother worked there, I know the guy who owns it, it's a private zoo, and he had said he would take them if I needed to give them up. I know they are a lot of work, and I had everything set up for them. I just got married and moved from the 5 acres in the middle of nowhere.
I don't want to part with them, but if I could find someone near here that could care for them as I was caring for them, then I would consider gfiving them up. Within the next 5 years, me and my wife are moving west, towardthe mountains, and we plan to have at least 5 acres, however, I'd rather not keep them stuffed up indoors for that long.

I was thinking that I might be able to make a sililar inclousure in my garage, and then after we fence in the backyard later this year, I could build a small pen outside. My garage gets a bit chilly in the winter, but I would insulate their area.
I was just thiking about what I would do with the garage after I clean up all the moving "debris." I'm probably moving all my chameleon food(roaches) into the garage and provide heat pads for when it gets cold. IT gets a bit hot in the summer, but a small AC unit would fix that problem. With some ceramic heaters, a heat pad and a little work, I think I could do it! I simply don't have enough space in my animal room to properly keep them until a pen can be put in next year(after the fence is up...don't tust the neighborhood kids) But I could put in a huge pen in the garage...anyone else do anything like that??
Looking at the pics of you sulcatas reminded me of why I go t them in the first place...if I gave them up now, I would regret it later on when my wife has her goats...I always pictured the goats and sulcatas grazing in the field.
Thanks! By the way, Nikki, where in NC do you live, anywat near Raleigh? or Asheville?

If you do an area in your garage, it should work fine, but raise it off the ground. Build a subfloor of some type, and put some safe heating method under the floor. Then make sure it's insulated on the bottom from the cold slab, and on the sides. Provide a good lid to keep out drafts in the winter and you should do fine, no lid neaded for the rest of the time. Set up a good outdoor pen to put them in in nice weather and you can be all set. If you are clever you could build the indoor section against the wall of your garage and the pen on the other side in the yard and make a tortoise door that you could lock closed when necessary.

I'm in fuquay-Varina, about 15 minutes south of Raleigh on 401.
Where do you live?

Turtlegirl Jun 08, 2003 01:22 PM

I'm in Asheville.
So I guess you're probably about 6 hours away...

If you still need a home for one, I could give the smaller one the run of my Herp Room in the winter months and eventually an outdoor pen in the summer time... Just let me know if you think I can help by adopting one...

Well, I really overguessed their size...the ones about 6", the other is about 10". I haven't actually measured them since their growth spurt... Like I said, I have not been giving them as much attention as they deserve for the past 6 months. My in-laws live in Etowah, in henderson county, near hendersonville. My father in law's birthday is on the 4th, so we'll be up there for that weekend. I'm going to see if it's going to be feasable to construct something in my garage, if not I would eaisly be able to bring the to you, we're up there about once a month.
Tough decisions....ahhh...
thanks for offering to help
Eric
