OT, but here's some new pics of my Sunbeam

Kestrel Jan 22, 2004 07:30 PM

She shed recently, so figured i'd take her out for some photos..

Ironically, my camera broke and decided it no longer wanted to read any form of media card, RIGHT after i was done taking these.

Beautiful pics, show the irridesence nicely. I seem to remember that they are difficult captives. How do you house them? What kind of food?

Thanks

Yeah, they're supposed to be pretty sensative with a high mortality rate, but mine has been doing good since the day I picked her up. The resaler who had them made sure she was feeding, etc first before selling her to me. I got her locally for like 50 bucks. As far as food goes, she eats adult mice. I just leave her alone, gave her potting soil substrate and a water dish, in a rubbermaid tub, and its all good.

50 bucks?! I've never been in the market for one but thats got to be really good, especially for one healthy and eating.

I'd imagine shes WC, i've never heard of them being CB for the pet industry. Did a little research before posting, turns out they were CB by Rocky Mountain Herpetoculture in '97. Is yours CB or WC.

I always thought they were rare in the wild but it turns out they have a broad range in SE Asia and adapt well to agriculture.

Found a very nice pic and thought I'd attatch it.

I used to travel to Indonesia with some frequency and although I spent almost all my time in the bustling metropolis of Jakarta, I did get out to the outskirts of town whenever possible. Any road that went through the extensive rice field areas was always good for finding DOR Sunbeam Snakes and Banded Kraits. Both species were very common in my limited experience. I never did find a live one however, because I could never get out there at night

Chris –

Your rice field comment made me remember a question a herper friend with a sense of humor asked me when we were talking about substrate for my newly-acquired sunbeam snakes. I said how complicated could it be since I had heard they inhabited rice paddies in Asia. He asked: “Does that mean you have to fertilize it with human waste?”

Yeah, mine's WC.. And yeah 50 bucks is good. lol. Least from what little i've seen of them for sale..

They were captively bred by Jungle Shadows last year I think, could be wrong.. Can't remember the name clearly.. Or it could of been the year before. I have a really bad memory. lol. But they were selling little CB babies.. I would be stoked if i could get one of the opposite sex and get some babies from them. Then would come the nightmare on getting the little things eating. ugh.

Great pics as always Brie... I was curious how you actually got a hold of that sun beam snake. I know they are not too common. Absolutely beautiful though.

Thanks y0..

And pure luck.. Local resaler had them.. I almost SH#% myself and called the guy.. Dropped by his place, and he gave me the healthiest one that'd eaten for him. Prolly helped that I saw his DJ table/equipment and BSed with him for a while about it, lol, so he said I could take it(the snake) for $50.
