Home Built Heater Voltage Regulator

jwalters Jan 22, 2004 09:35 PM

Sorry for the double post, I originally posted this in the cage and habitat forum but I thought it might be relavent here too!

Hello, thought some of you might be interested in doing this also. Recently, I've noticed my corn snake's hot side is a bit too hot (i use a zoo med under the tank heater), but I didn't feel like handing over ~20 bucks at the local pet store for the voltage regulator.
As any electrical engineer would do, I went shopping at Menards and bought a light dimmer switch and an outlet and made my own for ~6 bucks! Check it out. I think I might make a another one to regulate the intensity of my ball python light. Anyway, here is one of the pictures.

ALTHOUGH VERY SIMPLE TO WIRE, MAKE SURE YOU ARE CONFIDENT IN YOUR WIRING SKILLS IF YOU PLAN ON MAKING ONE OF THESE!

With that said, if anyone would like further detail on how to save a bit of $$ especially for those with large collections send me an email.

Yes, I agree not a perfect solution. However, I am around these guys every day so I still will keep a close eye on it. I would like to purchase a GCS or Helix tempiture controller but they are a lot of $$$
Thanks for the feedback!

Go with the GCS... Its kinda like that Ron Popiel Rotissiere thing... "JUST SET IT AND FORGET IT"

Ya, forget my $200 bucks! I will probably order one in a few months. I might build my own from a pic chip and a few other cheap thermal ic components.

I took a look at the Grainger website and looked at the ranco temp controller, but I couldn't see whether they have 120VAC outlets on them or if you have to buy another unit for it. Do you know, does those Ranco controller have an "outlet" of some sort built on it?
Thanks!
