Looking to get a crested

trevoro Jan 22, 2004 11:47 PM

I want to get a trio of cresteds, 1 male and 2 females. I am prepared to breed them when the time comes but I have a few questions since I've never owned a gecko. I have the husbandry equipment already since I've moved my bearded dragon to a larger home. My question is if there is anything that I will need that I don't already have from housing a BD?

I have a 30g tank, and heat light. I would make a hide box from a ziploc/glad disposable container. I use repcal calcium and miner-all for my dragon. Are these ok for a crested as well? I raise my own silkworms and I'm assuming these are fine for geckos as well, as long as they are the right size. The only extra food I can see buying is baby food.

Am I pretty much on track here. Anything else anyone can suggest?

Thanks in advance,
Trevor

Cresteds are extremely fun, easy to care for, and great as a display animal. They also don't mind being handled as long as it's around the night time. You shouldn't even have second thoughts about getting one. I enjoy mine very much.

The supplies that you have left over from the bearded dragon are okay, but crested geckos are native to the rainforests, so they need climbing objects, vetical and horizontal (cresteds will rarely travel to the ground unless hunting). Lack of climbing material though, can cause pelvic problems because they will sleep on the glass and put too much pressure on their pelvis. Spending too much time on the glass will cause deformities. Cresteds are the most comfortable at room temperature and will hide from the heat lamp, there won't be any use for it unless your home reaches below the high fiftys. Also, temperatures above 85 five degrees for an extended period of time can cause stress to the animal and could eventually kill it. Because they are from the rainforest they need to be misted thouroghly once or twice a day.

If you read this, please respond and let me know if you need any more information.

Hope this helps!
