Just moved to Florida and I think theres an unreported specie living here.

Kris Diekema Jan 23, 2004 01:08 AM

Anyone else in Palm Beach County? I just got here the 7th of January and I was out in the yard lookin at the species of lizards. We have the typical Brown Anoles, Mediteranean Geckos, Indo-Pacific geckos, and Curly-tails, but we also have another type of Anole that doesn't look like a Brown Anole. Its definately not a Green Anole, it dark brown/grey and has spots on it. Theres no stripes on it really, some of them have FAINT stripes and they have a slight-moderate keel on the back. The nose is rather blunt and they have a large head with the eyes positioned on the very top. They look almost like little Hydrosaurs. I thought they might have been Puerto Rican Crested Anoles, but they've only been reported from Miami. Anyone know anything about them possibly being in Palm Beach County?

In florida there are more types of lizards then you could comprehend. In miami there are great types even iguanas! I have seen those but i dont pay much attention to the grey anoles in my yard never noticed that they are unacounted for! I live in Orlando and can find about six types if i tried in one bush! Crested ones are my favorite beside greens. But i know what your talking about, some of them will have a head that will change to copper, i caught a couple and after a while its head turned copper little before it bred.

P.S.
Isnt florida the best place to live?

Kris Diekema Jan 24, 2004 03:37 PM

Well, there are TONS of introduced species here, I know that.
:-D But we've only got 3 Anole species that are established here in the Palm Beaches. Just didn't know if there was a way to notify people about them being here? I just moved from Maine, its great in Maine, but its a whole heck of a lot better here. It's amazing!

P.S. Do you know when the Daytona show is? I know they have the Reptile and alternative pet show right over in West Palm, but whens the big one?

I'm currently in Reno, NV (but from CA) and when I graduate college in May, I am really interested in moving to Florida... the area I seem to like most thus far is the Tampa/Clearwater/Palm Harbor area. I have to be within 5-10 mins from a beach & I need that awesome weather for my herps & myself too of course. From what I hear, the job market in Tampa is going off this year. I've been to Orlando & didn't really like it there, but I really liked the once a day thunderstorms preceeded by a lot of lay out by the pool time. Oh, and anoles everywhere was cool too! The humidity sucked! I am aslo trying to avoid the retirement communities. Any tips, comments?? ThankS!

I live in Lake Worth. Its right below West Palm Beach, across from Palm Beach and above Lantana. We're surrounded by a couple retirement cities, like Boca Raton, Delray Beach and Boynton Beach. Fortunately Lake Worth and West Palm are populated mostly by younger people, teens-30's, so its not bad. Theres a lot to do here as well, and we're about an hour and a half from Miami and an hour from Ft. Lauderdale, so the bigger cities are close. I just got here and love it so far, and the humidity isn't bad in the winter, but from what I hear, its hell in the summer.

Aren't you concerned about using wild plants/animals.. if they possibly had something sprayed on them, etc?

FloridaHerps Jan 31, 2004 03:40 PM

No Not concerned one bit! my yard has never had any fertilizers, no need for em and it is covered with broms, and firns, vines, looks great!

Sounds a bit like Anolis cybotes, the large headed anole? Males have a massively large head - females only moderately so. They are usually more "tan" than brown anoles, and show less markings, etc. They are confirmed as introduced to FLA, but I'm not sure exactly to what areas... Try looking them up, and see if they match. I know some of the field guides even include pics of them. Hope this helps...

The biggest one is in Dayona-Tampa is for the tamer hobbyists....! Daytona is hardcore.......can you snap a pic of the Anolis and post it here somewhere? That would really help out with an id.

On another note, I myself am from Florida :D Welcome to the neighborhood!
