Untimely Death Need Opinions

G8TOR Jan 23, 2004 01:31 AM

A good friend of mine called today to ask me a question about his monitor. He had an adult male Sav. that was alittle over weight so he has cut his feeding down to 1 smalll rat every other week. As of two weeks ago the Sav. went off of food, today he went into the Savs room found it hemorraging from the nose and mouth, within a half hour the animal was dead. This animal was very well kept and taken care of, he had free roam of a room and had a basking surface temp provided with of 110 degrees and the ambient temp in the room was 80 at floor level. The only thing I can figure is that maybe the Sav. had caught a mouse that had recently eaten some rat poison, but would it have taken this effect on the animal or just given it runny stool? I don't know what to tell him to do other than take it to the vet for tissue and blood samples. Can anybody please give some kind of clue as to what should be looked at as a possability.

Thank you
TB

Sorry to hear that.

As for the cause, well the list would be to great for me to type out. There are alot of things it could of been, may have been or was. His best bet is to have a necropsy performed by a good reptile vet. one that knows what he is looking for. They will probly also run blood work. They won't need to do any tissue sampling unless something is wrong with a tissue or maybe an organ.

Good luck and sorry, I could not be of more help. But it is hard to diagnose something simply on a symptom, no back ground info. or seeing the animal in person.

Rat poison? Take out a hit on your friend

G8TOR Jan 24, 2004 08:18 PM

I may not have been very clear as to why I was thinking rat poison. First off my friend lives in a trailor and I was thinking along those lines due to the fact that if your dog or cat get a hold of a couple rats that have ingested the poison they may show simular reactions. As I said he dosen't use rat or any other type of poisons but Maybe if a neighbor had put some out and the Sav. was feeding on some that may have entered the mobile home could this of happened? Again I know that nobody will be able to tell me that this is what happened but I was just wondering if it was a possibility or if anyone else had a similar experience.
